Russian TV has shown pictures of a man who is believed to have been one of the hostage-takers at the school in the southern town of Beslan. Channel One state television showed the man being dragged into a room by two masked commandoes.
His hands cuffed and locked behind his back, he makes a plea to the camera.
It is the very first evidence provided by the Russian authorities to back up their claim to have captured three of the hostage-takers alive.
In the footage, shown on Sunday evening, the man, whose accent strongly suggests he is from the region and not a foreigner, makes a plea to the camera.
"I really didn't go there to die and I still don't want to die. I swear, I swear to Allah the almighty, that I want to live," he says.
'Triumphalist'
The presenter says the alleged hostage-taker was trying to escape when the special forces caught him.
He had apparently shaved off his beard and was trying to flee with the liberated hostages.
The report was highly triumphalist and ended with images of the corpses of the dead hostage-takers crawling with flies.
The reports may go some way to reassuring ordinary Russians, many of whom are confused by the contradictory messages about casualty figures and exactly what happened in Beslan.
The incident has been a massive embarrassment for the Kremlin, but the message from state television tonight is that everything is now under control.
The terrorists did take hostages. They are rebelling against the Russian government. According to my dictionary, they are hostage-takers and rebels.
The "political correctness" criticism is valid when applied to loaded terms like "freedom fighters" or "Chechen liberation forces" - but not to descriptions like "hostage-taker" or "rebel" when they are used accurately.
Amnesty International must be about ready to have a stroke. The Russians are mistreating this piece of subhuman garbage by allowing his picture to be shown on TV.....
And I damn these people for all time for reducing me to this hatred.

Rebels aren't known to massacre little kids --- they are usually something you might see in Northern Ireland where they'll go up against a British soldier. Hostage-takers is a nice word for kidnappers -- but the Muslims in the school incident meant to die all along and kill their victims. Muslims use their martyrs to spread terror and subdue large populations which helps them take over.
Conversions aren't as hard as they might seem --- look at England when it went from Catholic to Protestant under King Henry the VIII --- a lot of people just go with the flow. Get rid of the leaders of Islam --- and many of the people will be freed to choose whatever religion they chose --- many would choose something other than Islam if they didn't fear execution as they do now.
Spain forced conversions of Muslims --- just by torturing a few leaders and giving the rest a choice to convert or leave.
Now we'll hear from the Arabs about mercy, with veiled threats if none is forthcoming.
"Paging the ACLU......"
Or Ramsey Clark.

I like the way you think.
It worked for me with the invading Turkish Army, they retreated from Wallachia and Transylvania.

Yes, and just consider the last Spanish election results which really encouraged them. Hey, it worked, it knocked out a Coalition ally. The Spanish had very few troops in Iraq, but the PR effect was everything.
Madrassa 101:
Q. What did our brave fighters learn from the Spanish train bombings?
A. Bomb those Western wusses right before a major election and they'll cave. We can control their voters!
Muslims in Spain must be strutting all around Madrid...
Wrong. Some rebel movements do, some don't.
Hostage-takers is a nice word for kidnappers
They're practically synonyms.

One of these days, I hope one of the women with the suicide belts blows up the whole crew of camel felchers along with herself while they are still en route.
Related question: are the women in these sorts of
jihad-ventures(TM) ever given firearms? They ought
to be able to plug the driver in the head while
on the way, as well.
If enough of the women did this, it'd soon make a difference.

more widespread resistance earlier on would've stopped

Do you have a reference for this?
Only one thing.
Given the tone and feeling here, and what the Russians
are feeling, I hope TO GOD they got the right guy.
Any info on if he was positively ID'd by any survivors?
