UNTIL President Bush began his speech on the final night of the Republican National Convention, the goal of the United States' anti-terror policy was perceived by a largely supportive public as a bid to assure safety. With a rhetorical flourish worthy of the great speeches of all time, George W. Bush has transformed the war into a battle for liberty.
In a speech that was at once eloquent and substantive, sensitive and dynamic, profound and familiar, Bush has risen to a level few presidents have ever reached.
Sometimes a strategist just has to sit back and gasp. Occasionally, a seasoned political observer needs to realize that he has seen something extraordinary. Tonight, Bush made me feel like that.
The speech satisfied every single political need. He contrasted with Kerry without appearing negative. He demonstrated emotion without pandering. He rose to a level of substantive specificity without becoming wonkish.
The Bush speech was akin to a State of the Union speech, surveying the landscape of American issues and articulating a proactive agenda for the next four years. But, like his stirring address to Congress in the aftermath of 9/11, he issued a ringing declaration for freedom, injecting the historic concept of freedom into the center stage in the 2004 election.

Pray for W and Our Troops
Bush has important battles to fight and limited political capital. 'Spending cuts' are a pretty effective club for Dems to bash a Republican president with, especially with media cooperation, and that bit of political theater keeps Republicans on the defensive.
There is more than one way to skin a cat. If Bush can transform some programs in a way that cuts Dems out of the loop, and makes people start to think about and appreciate autonomy, he may be planting a seed for later irrelevance of these programs. That's my theory anyway.
The speech worked because Bush didn't just read it, he meant it. The media and the pundits just don't know how to deal with a politician who is geniune. They really are beside themselves with frustration.

I wish Dick Morris would never appear on television again. He's such a self-important, cackling little twerp; he only serves to make people dislike whatever he likes. In this case he's absolutely correct, but it can't make me like him.
I thought overall he did a great job, but my eyes always start to glaze over whenever any politician starts to go into the usual laundry list of goodies that government is going to deliver for us. But basically he hit it right out of the ballpark.

One of the local socialist pundits here in Sodom on the Sound whined last night that the speech said little, had little substance, same ole same ole Bush crap, would gain him no bump, she expected no bump, then hedged and said well maybe a very very slight bump, but over all the speech did little, made little sense, would not inspire anyone at all, typical conservative B.S. The whine continues.
Whether YOU liked it or not, the twins' speech played very well amongst the younger set who are not political junkies.

The most important thing is to win, that is what its all about. Now make some more changes and sell the ideas to the electorate.
You are certainly NOT out of touch with the issues. It seems from some of your posts that you have difficulty looking at these type of events from the perspective of "how would this play in Peoria (or with the young set, with the ... )" Political junkies like us often can not understand how many people just don't pay attention to all this stuff.
I am amazed you didn't get that message from the President last night. If you re-read it, I think you'll find a whole load of that message was incorporated, though certainly not as powerfully as I would advocate.

"Dour" is an understatement for my mood after that banal, pointless, embarrassment to the whole Bush family--most of all to the twins themselves.
Let's not, in our love & enthusiasm for our President & everything connected to him (including his cute daughters who needed more help than they got) start fleeing from reality like DUers.

You? Hardly. You just can't watch all these aholes at once.
I'm not worried.....I'm convinced Bush will win......after what I saw Lurch do in that midnight rally/hate speech.......Lurch is done.
But while the theme of this speech was remarkable, as a speech, it fell flat.
