Silver Star with Combat V??????
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | August 27, 2004 | Thomas Lipscomb

Posted on 09/01/2004 4:11:22 PM PDT by sonofatpatcher2

The Sun-Times has put this article into their archives to be viewed for a fee. So to recap: in his last Friday article, Thomas Lipscomb said:

"In the midst of the controversy between the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and Kerry campaign representatives about Kerry's service in Vietnam, new questions have arisen.

"The Kerry campaign has repeatedly stated that the official naval records prove the truth of Kerry's assertions about his service.

"But the official records on Kerry's Web site only add to the confusion. The DD214 form, an official Defense Department document summarizing Kerry's military career posted on johnkerry.com, includes a 'Silver Star with combat V.'

"But according to a U.S. Navy spokesman, 'Kerry's record is incorrect. The Navy has never issued a "combat V" to anyone for a Silver Star.'

"Naval regulations do not allow for the use of a 'combat V' for the Silver Star, the third-highest decoration the Navy awards. None of the other services has ever granted a Silver Star 'combat V,' either."

But it was wrong, according to Kerry, for Boorda not to have his ribbons correct. Kerry was for correct ribbons before he was against it.

I've heard of the "V" with the Bronze Star plenty, but never with the Silver Star.

The combat "V" notation appeared on his DD214 and his corrected (in 2001) DD215.

It was not listed on his Silver Star citation nor did he wear one on his Silver Star ribbon on Meet the Press in 1971.

The medals controversy has slipped into he said she said in the major media. What is needed now is to connect Kerry's betrayal of his fellows in 1971 with today. The connection is in his efforts to claim credit for combat of Lt. Ted Peck on Boat 94 before Kerry took over, and in efforts to depict the other boats on March 13 as having fled with only Kerry going back to get Rassman, when in fact the other boats stayed to succor Boat 3 which had hit a mine and only Kerry fled. There are other examples. He is still lying about the valor of those who served, just as he did in 1971.

I'm not so sure about that. The V on on his Silver Star is totally inappropriate. No one has ever gotten one because the award isn't given! Somehow Kerry got one. He needs to explain that since he did it years after the initial award and the man who signed it, Lehman, has no idea how he got that put on his DD Form 214.

If you find the '71 Congressional Hearing picture of johnny chewing his nails, you will note he didn't have a V on his SS ribbon.

He couldn't resist adding to his Combat Penmanship awards, and had his SS commendation "rounded up" to a higher number later in his political life.

Actually, the DD214 dated 3/1/70 does appear to be in error in a number of respects. It clearly lists "SILVER STAR WITH COMBAT 'V'" but does not mention two ribbons included in the correction issued on 3/12/2001, more than 30 years later, "Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon" and "Navy Unit Citation Ribbon." There are also two Republic of Vietnam medals covered in 2001 that were not on the 3/1/70 DD 214.

The 3/1/70 DD 214 says "PURPLE HEART (3) AWARDS (SEE ATTACHED)" but I've found no attachments. Actual letters (two of which say "Saigon awards you") award a "Purple Heart Medal, Ribbon and Lapel Pin" and a "Gold Star" "... in lieu of a second [third] Purple Heart." The DD 214 makes no mention of these gold stars. So, the version of the DD 214 dated 3/1/70 is in error in many details and must have been reissued or corrected long before 2001.

In reviweing this material carefully, I am convinced that there have to be other documents issued later or as corrections that we have not seen. For example, two of the letters mentioned above say, "A certificate of this award will be forwarded directly to you by the Chief of Naval Personnel," yet there is not copy of the certificate nor of the transmittal document. The letter regarding the third Purple Heart says that a certificate "... will be issued to you ... upon your request" and recommends that such request be made, "... upon your return to the continental United States." There is no record of Kerry making a request or the CNP responding.

These and other questions can't be answered until Kerry releases his entire military file, warts and all.

He's had at least 3 DD 214. That in itself is very odd. I believe he only got out of the navy once, but knowing him, he was out before he was in and back out again.
