SOUTH DAKOTA: GOP Poll Puts Thune At The Magic 50 Mark
Hotline ^ | 8/31/04

Posted on 08/31/2004 4:27:57 PM PDT by Cableguy

A Public Opinion Strategies (R) poll, conducted 8/24-26 for the NRSC, surveyed 500 likely voters; margin of error +/- 4.4% (NRSC release, 8/31). Tested: Sen. Tom Daschle (D) and '02 GOP nominee John Thune.

General Election Matchup All Fav/Unfav Thune 50% 62%/29% Daschle 48 61 /35 DK/Other 2

Pollster Glen Bolger: "In the nearly two months since he has gone on the air, Thune has closed the gap, even in the midst of a challenging national political climate. John Thune's message of independence and standing up for [SD] values has reminded voters why they like him, and has translated into a strong showing on the ballot test" (release, 8/31).

That would be so SWEET if Daschle gets the boot. Better than when Foley lost in '94. I hope the President is able to get up to SD and campaign for Thune.

Good news, Go Thune Go...

Was this a toss up state for senate Republican pickup?

Still plenty of time for the voter fraud brigade to go to work.

This is where I'm sinking my political donations this year-- Thune campaign (even though I'm a NYer) and Swifties. Best bang for the buck. May this poll be true and may Thune's margin grow to counteract the reservation fraud factor.

Needs to be much more than fifty. You have to factor in all the vote fraud.

The best thing the President could do is visit South Dakota and talk about his plans for a second term. Then, he needs to tell the voters, "I am going to be hamstrung accomplishing any of them or effectively fighting the war on terror because the Senate majority leader needs only 41 votes to prevent anything from being acted on. He is not afraid to use his 41 votes and I just don't see how it is possible to elect 60 reliable senators. But we can elect John Thune, who will be an invaluable help to my second term. In fact, I will instruct my electors in South Dakota to cast their votes for John Kerry without John Thune serving in the Senate. We cannot govern effectively with another four years of a minority leader holding the senate hostage. The fate of the nation is upon the shoulders of the good voters of this state."

I've thought that John Thune was going to win this one for the last two years.

And my sources on the ground in SD have been telling me for quite some time that Daschle is in all likelihood going to fall very much short (pun totally intended!).

John shook up his campaign staff for this go-round, and they seem to be doing a good job.

Thune is one of the best candidates you could ever ask for, in terms of personal abilities. He's a bit more moderate than fits my personal taste, but people like him alot. He's a winner.

Yep, this is terrific news. It does explain why L'il Tommy Daschle had to put out the Bush-hugging commercial. And NYS, you're correct that Thune and the Swifties offer the most bang for the buck.

It is now clear that this election has turned the corner. What is true but less obvious, is that the turning point was Kerry's acceptance speech in Boston. It was over then, just waiting to be played out to disaster for Kerry.

Good idea, but I think the Burr in NC race would be best for the buck. The way I see it, SD will be saturated with dollars, but Burr could use the $$$ to contend with Irksome Bowels' deep pockets. Also, Burr needs to increase his name ID as opposed to Thune who is already well known.
