Sprinting is not only the most natural form of movement, but also an individual sport that allows comparing the performance of differente athletes over different periods of time.
Today sprinting became the first and ONLY truly global individual sport.
Jeromy Wariner became today the first white american (and the second white ever, after the greek Kenteris in 2002) to enter the top ten "all time" performer list of an olympic sprint contest (100, 200 and 400 m).
Performance Rank - Performance - Wind - Name - Country - Birth date - Rank in race - Place - Date
===== 400 m (Wariner : Rank 6)
1 43.18 Michael Johnson USA 13.09.67 1 Sevilla 26.08.1999
2 43.29 Harry Reynolds USA 08.06.64 1rA Zürich 17.08.1988
6 43.50 Quincy Watts USA 19.06.70 1 Barcelona 05.08.1992
16 43.81 Danny Everett USA 01.11.66 1 New Orleans 26.06.1992
21 43.87 Steve Lewis USA 16.05.69 1 Seoul 28.09.1988
36 44.00 Jeremy Wariner USA 31.01.84 1 Athínai 23.08.2004
45 44.09 Alvin Harrison USA 20.01.74 3 Atlanta 19.06.1996
45 44.09 Jerome Young USA 14.08.76 1 New Orleans 21.06.1998
52 44.13 Derek Mills USA 09.07.72 1 Eugene 04.06.1995
56 44.14 Roberto Hernández CUB 06.03.67 2 Sevilla 30.05.1990
He's pretty fast.
Not true.
The first white Americans to enter the top ten all time performers in an Olympic sprint contest were Thomas Burke (1896 100m and 400m champion), Francis Lane (1896 100M Bronze) and Herbert Jamison (1896 400M Silver).
I'm referring to "global", so to the period after 1970. Before there were hardly any good runners in most of the countries that dominate today (exception being black americans).
What about Pietro Mennea, italian, who held the world record in the 200 Meters for 17 years. Won the gold in 1980 Olympics (I know, I know the boycott year).
Remember Russian Valery Borzov, winner of the Gold in the 100 and 200 meter race in 1972 Olympics.
After watching the preening, strutting and chest thumping by Mo Greene and the other sprinters in the 100 meter finals last night...a little fresh blood and Wariner-type humility is a refreshing thing to see.
Thanks for remembering him - that's so early at the start of the "global era" that I forgot about him.
That Belarussian chick in the women's 100m put on a good show... assuming that there isn't a gallon of EPO in her blood.
So it wasn't global until a white person won it?
Much ado about nothing.
He can flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy....
He's going to win gold.
I thought EPO was more effective in endurance sports...
Is it common among sprinters?
Yeah, no kidding, I was rooting against that Jefferson kid because of his stupid attitude and showboating. Glad to see he and Mo Greene lose. Did ya know that the US Olympic track officials had to tell them to cool it after their antics in the prelims?
More likely, I think, would be HGH, THG, or some other BALCO-esque steroid, some eight-week cycle type of steroid.
I think you are correct that EPO would be more of an endurance drug.
It's strange that a 25YO would 'come out of nowhere' to win Olympic gold... but kudos to her if it's legit. I mean, REAL kudos, since, a propos of this article, you rarely see fair-skinned types in the 100m, men or women.
We all know the Eastern Blocs dominance in the Olympics was drug enhanced.
Then there was the case of all those Chinese swimmers smashing every record by huge margins...all those results were thrown out.
From an athlete's perspective, wouldn't the win mean less if you knew you won by doping?
I don't know if that's the case or not, but, it begs the question; Why would they dope then and risk so much?
