CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush says a veterans group should stop television ads criticizing John Kerrys war record.
The president's criticism of the ads by Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth came as Bush denounced all TV ads by outside groups attacking both Kerry and himself on Monday and called for a halt to all such political efforts.
I think theyre bad for the system, he said.
Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP The president, center, was meeting at his Texas ranch with his defense team when he made his remarks on the ad controversy.
When asked specifically whether the ads by the group "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" should be halted, Bush said: "All of them. That means that ad, every other ad. Absolutely."
"I can't be more plain about it," Bush said. "I hope my opponent joins me in condemning these activities of the 527s (political groups that sponsor to ads). I think they're bad for the system."

So, it's only the numbers that matter?
Not the character the two men share? Not the strength of conviction they share?
Not the ability to tell right from wrong, stand up against the whole world if necessary, and have the courage to do something to right the wrongs?
You may well be the shallowest person I've seen on FR.......
Can't someone tell McCain to simply STFU?
Love the picture of the five heroes and the dumb dog!!!
I am listening now. Painful but very powerful, very powerful.
**Bush calls for halt to Swift Boat vets' ads**
That's NOT what he said.
He called a halt to ALL the 527 soft money funded ads.
Leave to the lamestream media........Argghh!
Right. Kerry just wants the patriots silenced, but not the socialists.
Bush thinks the loop hole is wrong for both sides and needs to be fixed. At least Bush is fair about it.
Hmm...sounds like what they said about Campaign Finance Reform. "It's unconstitutional, so go ahead and sign it. Win/win."
I certainly hope the Swifties don't back down, but it irritates me to see the president taking this line. What in world is wrong with a bunch of guys who put their lives on the line back in Vietnam availing themselves of the Free Speech they fought to protect?
Dubya knows "the lay of the land," so to speak. . .
Bush is trying to stay out of this. It's Kerry vs. decorated vets.
Bush simply denounces all 527's, and moves on.
The liberal press is trying to spin his words, but if you read the article, you'll see their headlines are not what Bush really said. They're trying to discredit the vets by spinning Bush, but Bush is keeping his nose clean and away from Kerry's war. It's not his problem.

You are plenty sanctimonious enough to run for office yourself! YOU said Bush is a PR Master. Well, then. How to measure that? Or are you the rare conservative who prefers feelings to facts? I say a good way to measure his ability as a PR Master is the vote count. You want to propose a better measure? Not subjective gobbledygook, but an objective measure? Or shall we just go on with moony reverance and pithy words?
Hey Huck, I think you are unfairly Bashing Bush for CFR WRT 527s. They are not in the law, they are an FEC exception to the law. Bush's reading of the CFR law, as well as my own, leads me to the conclusion that CFR makes 527s illegal. The FEC reading of it makes them legal.
Now, I disagreed with CFR as a whole because I think it is a violation of the first amendment. But I don't think blaming 527s on Bush is appropriate...this loophole should no be there according to the law. And CFR should not be there according to the Constitution.
You can Bash Bush for CFR as a whole, but not for 527s. That is an FEC creation, not part of the law the President signed into existance.
Has Kerry taken a position on 527s? (lemme guess...he was against them before he was for them?) He's just playing politics.
Bush thinks the loop hole is wrong for both sides and needs to be fixed. At least Bush is fair about it.
He is consistently wrong on the issue of political speech. I grant you that.
Oops! How about "move forward?"
All the whining about 527's...
For the first time I feel like I have some control over how my political money is actually being spent.
The RNC and DNC must be freaking out that they cannot control the course of their respective campaigns. Ha! Ha! Ha!
I appreciate you adding these facts to the discussion. I didn't know all of that. But isn't it fair to say that without CFR, there is no need for 527s? And how long did it take for them to surface after CFR? Ten minutes? No one in the White House from Alberto Gonzalez on down had a clue? An inkling? And if 527s are illegal, then the law GWB signed would prevent the swift boats from being heard, no? Sounds to me like on CFR, I can bash GWB as hard as I want, and on 527s. It's his bed. Ok, he didn't make the pillowcases. But he put em on the bed. No?
He's anything but. He can't stop the Swifties and now a few more of the public are going to understand the Swifties aren't motivated by politics but by love of country.
Yes. Any that speak out against him must be stopped. Books should be removed from the shelves, and television stations are threatened if they ruin ads against him.
He wants all 527's that don't support him stopped immediately.
Isn't that a little off topic? I am surprised PJB didn't wait til the convention to throw his .00000005% of the electorate to Bush. Oh yeah, he's not a Republican anymore.
I just thought you'd like to know. Good news, isn't it?
