CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush says a veterans’ group should stop television ads criticizing John Kerry’s war record.
The president's criticism of the ads by Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth came as Bush denounced all TV ads by outside groups attacking both Kerry and himself on Monday and called for a halt to all such political efforts.
“I think they’re bad for the system,” he said.

When asked specifically whether the ads by the group "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" should be halted, Bush said: "All of them. That means that ad, every other ad. Absolutely."
"I can't be more plain about it," Bush said. "I hope my opponent joins me in condemning these activities of the 527s (political groups that sponsor to ads). I think they're bad for the system."

I love when GWB does stuff like this. He lets something fester and then finally caves, thus getting ALL the bad press from the left on the front end, and then gets scorned on the back end by the right as an appeaser. Sure looks weak.
I was wondering how long it would take the media to spin the President's dissatisfaction with (failed) CFR and 527s into an attack on the Swifties. The answer....minutes.

Another misleading headline from the MSM. Bush said ALL 527 ads, and refused to specifically condemn the Swift Boat ads.

I love it... both the article title and the subheading provide spin for the Kerry campaign. Bush called for an end to ALL 527 advertisements, not just the Swiftees' ads.

I listened carefully to what W said this morning. He called for an end to the 527's. I didn't hear him go after the Swiftboat Vets in particular. You won't hear that because I believe the current McCain/Finegold Campaign Finance laws disallow that. It won't matter because the Vets are not going to let up, as they said on Rush's show this morning.
This is great because he called for both sides to stop all ads at once.
He knows the Left will not stop their ads, so he has nothing to worry about, but he gets credit for calling off the attack dogs. But he did NOT call them off AND all he really did was point out skerry's hypocrisy.

Bush called for all 527 ads to end. I disagree, but I think it's political posturing so he can have the high road over baby Kerry.
Don't believe everything you read
I think the President is perfect in calling for ALL ads to be stopped but he know s they will not and he cannot say a word about the SBV's or else the media would go into sleaze overdrive (like there not already).So he's doing fine by me.
