Bush calls for halt to Swift Boat vets' ads

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush says a veterans’ group should stop television ads criticizing John Kerry’s war record.

The president's criticism of the ads by Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth came as Bush denounced all TV ads by outside groups attacking both Kerry and himself on Monday and called for a halt to all such political efforts.

“I think they’re bad for the system,” he said.

Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP The president, center, was meeting at his Texas ranch with his defense team when he made his remarks on the ad controversy.

When asked specifically whether the ads by the group "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" should be halted, Bush said: "All of them. That means that ad, every other ad. Absolutely."

"I can't be more plain about it," Bush said. "I hope my opponent joins me in condemning these activities of the 527s (political groups that sponsor to ads). I think they're bad for the system."

This is great because he called for both sides to stop all ads at once.

Why is that great? I don't think any of them should be told by the gubmint to stop their ads. What about free speech?

He knows the Left will not stop their ads, so he has nothing to worry about, but he gets credit for calling off the attack dogs.

Yes, his transparent duplicity is so refreshingly...just like everyone else in DC.

But he did NOT call them off AND all he really did was point out skerry's hypocrisy.

And his own.

Bwahahaha this gets better by the minute. The media tries to spin this as a rejection of the Swift Boat ads meanwhile the Kerry campaign via John Edwards says the opposite: " (Bush)...Didn't go far enough". The fluid nature of this plus Kerry's confusion on his story has gotten the MSM and Kerry contradicting each other.
Spin only works if its coordinated (see the Clintons and talking points for professional spinning).

Bush calls for halt to Swift Boat vets' ads

Shouldn't that headline read as follows? Bush calls for halt to ALL 527 ads

But hey, maybe that's just me. You know the citizens are starting to wake up to the mainstream media liberal bias. But you guys just keeping digging yourself deeper. Pretty soon no one is going to listen at all. If I were you, I would report just the facts. But journalists are so far out there that you only hear and see what you want and not what is actually presented to you.

Headline is is BLATANT LIE. He did NOT call for a halt to the Swift Boat ads. He called for an end to all 527 ads equally, which is the most he can legally do. He did NOT single out the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and OTHER parts of the propaganda machine are already blasting him for it. GGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I hate the media.

He is merely saying the very same thing he said all along - he condemns ALL 527's - not the vets - all (including MOVEON and all the dem ones).

This is not a cave at all. He just said Kerry should be proud of his service (because he did go to Vietnam).

Now - how the press will report it is - Bush condemns the Swift Vet ads.....Bush supports Kerry's service......Bush told the Swift Vets to stop.....

This was really his only option unless he wants to be right in the middle of the fight and he does not. Also, he CAN'T tell them to quit because they are not doing this for him. If he did, the press would report Bush tells his group to quit.

Bush calls for halt to Swift Boat vets' ads

Rush was dead on with this. As soon as he heard the news conference he predicted what the headlines were going to read and then what the media would ignore. He predicted this headline word-for-word and he said the Bush comment about banning all 527s would be ignored.

President's dissatisfaction with (failed) CFR and 527s

Tough toast. He should have kept that bill in his pocket instead of second guessing the Supremes.

For those of you who see an upside in everything, this is your wake-up call. Sometimes things are just plain wrong.

The President said let's be civil. Three Year Old Kerry resumed his temper tantrum. Inspired strategery!

Please stop knee jerking. He did NOT condemn the SBVfT ads secifically. He called on all 527 ads to stop and called on Kerry to join him in stopping ALL of them. Which we know Kerry won't do, as 87% of all 527 ads have been paid for by DEMOCRATS and Kerry has no problem with those.

This is a challenge to Kerry, not ANY member of any veterans organization. Kerry challeneged him to "bring it on" and he just did.

Ya'll seem mighty anxious to condemn the president without fact.

I love when GWB does stuff like this. He lets something fester and then finally caves, thus getting ALL the bad press from the left on the front end, and then gets scorned on the back end by the right as an appeaser.

It seems like every move he makes for purely political reasons is poorly calculated. When he sticks up for what he truly believes, he is successful. Bush needs to dump Karl Rove and get some new advisors.

If so - Bush is a fool

Read ALL the articles that say this. No, he still attacks ALL 527's. This is a disinformation attempt. Bush did no such thing. I watched the whole interview on TV.

I assume your IQ is over the double digit mark, so you should know full well that the president is not proposing that the gubmint ban the ads. This is the only way he can counter attack Kerry for attacking HIM on the swift boat vets' ads rather than answer the charges.

Bush is a PR master and has managed, like Reagan, to confound and bypass the lamestream media, despite their influence and their collusion with the Democrites.

You don't have to wait for the Mainstream Press to spin this, Knee jerk FReepers right here will beat them to it.

Bush knows there is no stopping these Ad's, so he takes the high road and at the same time challenges Kerry to do the same.... Win/Win situation as far as I'm concerned

This is fine, the "war record" phase has been well covered.

The SBVs can still attack Kerry full-out over his 1971 treason.
