"Al Jolson in October" -- Swifties have a mega-october surprise?
To the Point ^ | August 19th | Dr. Jack Wheeler

AL JOLSON IN OCTOBER
TTP Intelligence Bulletin
Dr. Jack Wheeler
Thursday, August 19, 2004

All indications are that the Swiftees’ offensive against Hanoi John is severely damaging the Kerry/Edwards candidacy. The television ads by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and the #1 bestseller on Amazon, Unfit For Command, have credibly assaulted the basis for Kerry’s campaign: that his self-proclaimed status as a “war hero” during 4 months in Vietnam qualify him to be President of the United States.

However… in the famous words of Al Jolson: “You ain’t heard nothin’ yet.” The Swiftees have prepared an October Surprise for Hanoi John that is going to blow his candidacy out of the water. I can’t tell you what it is, but I can tell you the television and radio ads have already been taped, and they are going to have an impact like an elephant sitting on a donkey.

The Swiftees have three things in abundance: money, brains, and balls. They know exactly how to go for the jugular, they have the dough to do it, and they are saving their best shot for last. The Democrats will not know what hit them and will not know how to retaliate. Get set folks. The Kerry Train Wreck is not going to be a pretty sight.

I thought the 529's couldn't do ads that late. I think this is bogus.

Maybe, but 527's can.

That Bush DUI is old news - they fired that popgun in the '00 campaign and... nothing.

The Swiftees have three things in abundance: money, brains, and balls.

That last attribute is sorely lacking, and sorely needed in American politics today.

This report may be using "October surprise" as a metaphor, not the report of an actual ad in October.

Well, I wouldn't call what they got with the Bush DUI story "nothing." It is impossible to determine, of course, but I recall that the last five days of the 2000 campaign were very bad for Bush and the DUI bombshell was a big part of this. How many votes in FL, NM, IA and WI did this cost W? Sure, he wound up in the Oval Office but let's not forget how nip-and-tuck THAT was!

George Will reported yesterday that the SBVfT have a 28 minute documentary coming out the first week of Sept that will be very damaging to sKerry.

Was that on TV or in his writing?

Owl,

I think its time to post my memories of what took place those many years ago in the steamy jungle...No matter the political differences we Vietnam Vets may have with one another, we usually close ranks with one another and protect each other from outside abuse. That's why its so disturbing when one of our own is the cause of the problem. We begged and pleaded with John Kerry not to run for the presidency, for this very reason. You see, he has a secret that he's hiding and it will have to come out now. I remember that unfortunate episode as if it were yesterday...

Quang Tri. 1969. The name on my uniform said Lee but they knew me as "Cap'n Fury."

I was known as the hot-headed member of Coastal Division 11, the one most likely to get eaten by a tiger while surfing the Mekong. But I was enlisted, so as long as I kept myself in check while on patrol all was okay in my world. But Lt. Kerry was different - he was an officer in charge of a boat, and sometimes the OIC of a patrol. His recklessness could get someone killed, and I know for a fact that it eventually did.

Our COs didn't like for us to hot-dog on our own during downtime. Mainly we sat around between patrols drinking beer, playing cards, pretty much like you see in any war flick. But not Boston John. No, he had his ambitions and schedule, and no one was going to keep him from fulfilling them. He brought an 8 mm film camera to 'Nam with him, to film "the action, all the action," he would say with a lacivious grin. After we came back from a patrol he would go back and film the areas we'd been in if there had been a firefight or dust-up.

After a while he got to complaining about having to drive the boat, lug the equipment, and then still not be able to do an adequate job filming himself re-creating the action. He also complained about not having any hired help around, like back at home. He needed someone to make his bed, iron his clothes, etc.

Well, enter Du Mi, a 12-year old Vietnamese boy from the nearby village of Bang Ho. Du's older brother came around one day selling off their sister's charms to any wealthy officer, and Boston John sneeringly declined. We were shocked that he would turn down an offer like that, but the jungle makes a man do strange things.

"Oh, you funny boy, huh? You want Du Mi?"

Kerry was slower to decline this time, but there was a twinkle in his eye. That night he took the skimmer, a Boston Whaler, assigned to our unit and left without explanation. He returned the next morning, bleary-eyed and exhausted. This went on for several nights.

Soon after we were on patrol near Bang Ho when we took some VC fire. As I cranked the fifty-cal around to return fire, Kerry stopped me. "No," he said, "we don't know which hut its coming from. We don't want any innocents gettin' killed."

I believed him at first but became suspicious as he ordered us to hightail it out of there instead of torching the village as he had done several times before with much less provocation. I discussed it with him that night and was shocked by his response.

Kerry took me into his confidence, maybe assured by the fact that he knew so much about me that he could have me court-martialed in a heartbeat, or that no one would believe me if I said anything. [This is also probably why the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth did not ask me to participate, what with that misunderstanding at the convent and that inflatable sheep episode and all. The guys were just looking out for me.] Kerry explained to me how his views on life had been changed by his time in-country. All that was pure was now sullied. He sought solace in what little innocence he could find, namely Du Mi.

"There's nothing like a young boy with nice hair and a big smile," he told me.

I kept his revelation to me in confidence up to now, but feel that I must break it in order to preserve the integrity of my other swift boat mates now that this has become a campaign issue.

What happened before he was transferred out is truly worthy of analysis in the study of traumatic stress syndrome. We were called out on an unexpected patrol in response to another craft receiving heavy fire near Bang Ho. Lt. Kerry was nowhere to be found, so we were led instead by Lt. Steven Gardner.

We pulled ashore at Bang Ho a couple hundred yards downstream from the action, hoping to catch the VC unaware, and happened to land near the hut where Du Mi and his family lived. In the confusion we saw the 12-year old boy running out of the hut clad in only a loincloth, shouting "no, no, please mister John!"

We were shocked to see Lt. Kerry follow him out of the hut, stooped over in obvious pain and clad in black silk pajamas and some open-toed high heels. He was yelling back, "You twerp, you're going to get me caught. I've got women to marry! I've got campaigns to run!" With that, he shot the poor boy in the back in what must have been the first of many cover-ups in his adult life.

He ran off to the skimmer that he had nearby and took off for our base, not realizing that we were watching the whole thing. He sought out our doctor, Lou Letson, and told him something strange had happened in a firefight. He had a ruptured "muscular ring" in an embarrassing part of his anatomy. "I don't know how it happened, doc," the future senator exclaimed.

Later that night I approached him, and he repeated what he had told me before as tears welled up in his eyes: "There's nothing like a young boy with nice hair and a big smile. What am I going to do now?"

Well, the next morning, he got his answer when our CO informed him of the rule that he could leave after getting three Purple Hearts. Kerry was scurrying out the door in a flash, on his way back stateside. I wonder if he still has a thing for young guys with nice hair and big smiles?

527s that do not accept donations from corporations or unions can run any kind of ad they want.

I have to assume this "loophole" figured into the Supreme Court ruling.

On saturday, Bob Novak was on the Capitol Gang on CNN and suggested that something big was coming, and that it might have to do with someone who was on Frenchie's boat.

I want to see what it is...

Unless this is something absolutely huge, I think--in this time of ever-shortening attention spans--that the SBV's time will have passed by then.

I thank you for your brave service and sacrifices.  That you were able to keep your hands off the "kinder" while in South East Asia is a testament to you that John Kerry cannot prescribe to himself.

I can only imagine how tempting that must have been, in fact, I oftentimes lie awake wondering what I'd do in such a situation, but our goal was to protect South Vietnam and its precious natural resource (young boys with nice smiles and good hair), not to partake of the best Indo-China has to offer.

Thank God John Edwards was awarded his two deferments or the scars left behind by some of our GI's would be indelible indeed.

Yes. I think our free speech rights end 20 months before the election. In that period, only the candidates and professional journalists and pundits have free speech rights.

Well, if Tah-RAY-zaaaah thinks the schedule of the campaign is grueling, just imagine what Johnny Edwards is going through. Kerry is taking such full advantage of him that he [Edwards] hardly has time to make campaign appearances. We'll have to keep a careful eye on events as they unfold to see who wins the office "When-Will-Edwards-Start-Walking-Bowlegged Pool"! Remember, I've got August 29th in Dubuque!
