The Kerry campaign is gloating this weekend over the resignation of Bush Cheney volunteer, former Vietnam War POW Ken Cordier, who's featured in the latest Swiftboat ad - saying it proves illegal coordination between the Swiftvets' 527 group and the official Bush campaign.But Kerry has no plans to fire Zach Exley, a key campaign staffer who served as the organizing director for MoveOn.org throughout the presidential primaries. What's more, MoveOn, whose sole mission is to defeat President Bush in November, maintains that Exley is allowed to "communicate" with the 527 group even as he works for the Democratic nominee.
"Col. Cordier did not inform the campaign of his involvement in the advertisement," the Bush campaign said in a statement late Saturday. "Because of his involvement [in the ad] Col. Cordier will no longer participate as a volunteer for Bush-Cheney '04."
But there's no doubt that Kerry knew all about Exley's background when he hired him.
In April the Kerry for President Web site proudly announced: "Zach Exley joins the [Kerry] Internet team as Director of Online Communications and Online Organizing. He was previously the director of special projects for the MoveOn.org."
Exley claims he won't communicate with MoveOn until after the election, but when he teamed up with Kerry, MoveOn's executive director, Eli Pariser, acknowledged that Exley will be able to make use of "what he's got in his head."
And a statement issued by MoveOn when Exley signed on with team Kerry insisted, "federal election rules permit some forms of communication" between Exley and the liberal 527.
As for the ideas that Exley has "got in his head" and will now be sharing with the Kerry campaign, his past credits include a political parody site that portrayed Bush as a crack user.

Heck, they haven't even gone after Exley for some of the comments he's made, including one that called the US the world's leading human rights abuser.
What was the point of this "aren't they barbaric!" story?
At least the Afghani people in Marc Manson's story have the guts to be honest with themselves about their justice system.
What's worse: cutting off someone's hand for a petty theft, or locking someone up for decades for a crime they did not commit, or for something that no rational person would consider a crime? In our enlightened country we have tens of thousands of people in jail with sentences of 10 years or more for drug crimes they didn't commit, or for things like possession of pot, which clearly does not deserve jail time whether it's a crime or not.
For details on this one great source is Frontline's web site 'Snitch': http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/snitch/ They do a great job of explaining how our drug laws put people in jail for the drug crimes of others, while letting off the people who actually committed the crime.
Our justice system is just as public and inhumane as the one described in Carl's post. If we are more enlightened than those Afghanis, what good does it do if it doesn't cause us to even try to stop our own barbaric human rights abuses?
Another angle on this would be to look at the Gulf War as a form of justice. We punished the Iraqi people for the invasion of Kuwait. We bombed the land where "an eye for an eye" was invented, but we took that principal much further. For invading a country of 250,000 people (extremely rich people, most of whom were on vacation) we killed 500,000 Iraqis--mostly soldiers during the war.
Then, we continued to punish the people, and by established estimates a million or so people, mostly children, have died as a result of the sanctions which for a while didn't even let medicine, like penicillin, into the devastated country.
Isn't that justice more barbaric than anything the Taliban have done? A million and a half lives for the crime of invading a country of 50,000. --Especially considering that we committed the same crime by invading Panama only a couple years earlier.
Well, this may seem all a bit out of line. But perhaps people will think it is something worthy of discussing. The left these days is very obsessed with the crimes of other countries like China, and Afghanistan. And it just seems a shame that there is so little energy in comparison, these days, going into stopping the worst human rights abuser: ourselves (i.e. America).

I don't agree at all. I don't know when the most recent commercial was made, but it seems to me that as soon as the SBV's gained traction and the Bush campaign was deliberately taking a "hands off" posture, the man should have asked approval (if done recently) for the commercial, or notified the campaign of what he had done.
I just don't think a campaign can afford to be surprised or taken off guard by one of their staff. And, of course, the media would hammer this point of vulnerability forever. It isn't fair, they aren't doing the same with JFK and moveon, but that's the field we're playing on.
To the contrary, a couple of other threads have reported his is a "hands-on" campaign that has him directing his campaign lawyers to write letters to radio/TV station owners in spite of advice not to, and to attack Bush directly as being responsible for Swiftie ads.
I agree with your strategy points, Dianna, but the person I was posting to was insisting this was proof of illegal activity by the Bush/Cheney campaign and having encountered this poster on another thread I mocked him via sarcasm.
Yes, I realize the playing field and the extreme caution all Bush supporters ought to employ and I agree Cardier should have recused himself from volunteering for the Bush campaign before taking part in the SV commercial in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict and not give one crumb of complaint to the enemy.

JOHN KERRY'S presidential campaign, which slighted Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (news - web sites) during the Democratic convention last month, now wants the former first lady to lead its "truth squad" at next week's GOP convention, The Post has learned.
Party insiders said that aides to Clinton were engaged in "intensive talks" over the weekend with Kerry's representatives about the role she is expected to play.
"It will be high profile; she will be one of the responders at the convention, probably focusing on homeland security issues," said a source familiar with the talks. "I think it's fair to say the Kerry people realize Mrs. Clinton could be very effective."
Another insider said, "It's ironic that after they snubbed her in Boston, they now want to use her in New York." ...(Snip)
