"I could have sworn I read he was at U/Chicago. Maybe it was some kind of post-grad studies."

I dunno, maybe. But I do know that he's a constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago School of Law, and perhaps that's what you were thinking about.

Under the circumstances, Keyes was a good choice.

I stipulate "under the circumstances" because the circumstances are hopeless. So why not have a little fun?

A combination of bad luck, bad behavior, bad candidates, bad party organization, and bad demographics have combined to make this seat unwinnable. Sad indeed in a state where the GOP currently holds the seat, and in a state where the GOP was, until relatively recently, very competitive.

If I thought the GOP had any chance whatever in prevailing here, I'd advocate any number of candidates ahead of the self-aggrandizing, pompous carpetbagger, Dr. Keyes. But the seat is lost, and this race could act as a badly-needed catharsis for the Illinois GOP. Rebuilding from the ground up should start in January, 2005.

I'm torn here. I love Alan Keyes and I'd support him if I were in Illinois. I also support the 11th commandment, and I have no desire to say anything negative against him.

But I could write the campaign ads for Obama. I'd reckon most Illinois voters know NOTHING about Keyes and they're only going to have a few months to get to know him. All Obama has to do is run an ad using Keye's own words and he's done.

I understand what people on this thread are saying when they say it's not the same as Hillary. I do see the difference, but it is a subtle one. Not something most voters would pick up on, unless they ALREADY knew and liked Keyes, which in this case, they don't.

But I'm rootin' for him all the way.

That's all the negativity I wish to bring to this thread.

Maryland is MD, just FYI. ;)

But I don't suppose that's a requisite. It would make sense, if he could financially support it, to have a residence where he can put his family close enough to Washington that he doesn't need to spend so much time away from them. Morally, I have no problem with it. Politically? I have no idea. I suppose I'd have to take a poll. Why do you think it would be wrong to keep the house in MD, even if he owns a house in Illinois, as well?

I remember the "scandal" that erupted during Bush I's relection campaign when it was suddenly "discovered" that Bush's residency in Texas was nothing more than a post office box or something. Well...Why the heck pay taxes for 12 years on something that you don't use? But, that's the media for you. If you're a pubbie, you can do no right.

"Keyes has very little charisma or appeal to voters. He will lose."

ROFL... Give my regards to Obama.

I'm still waiting for you to post those "numbers" you said I haven't looked at. Where are they?

Furthermore, I vote straight Republican no matter who wins so please don't pretend that just because I disagree with you therefore I must be a supporter of Obama.

Would you prefer I don't give you my honest opinion? I really don't believe Keyes will beat Obama. Keyes is a great debater but he is not a very likable candidate. Obama is.

Oh please...give me a damned break!

It was immoral when Hillary did it, and it's immoral now.

One of the reasons why he lost here in Maryland was because it was exposed that he took something like a $96,000 annual salary from his campaign contributions.

As opposed to Kerry, who takes his full senate salary while campaigning full time.

Hell, I was against hillary for carpetbagging, but that is just the point. If they can do it and it is ok, then it has to be ok for us too. I am from Pa, the Illinois voters get the final say.

I like Keyes. I'd vote for Keyes over Obama.

But it's extremely sad that the Illinois GOP has to get an Marylander to run instead of one of the 11+ million people that live in Illinois.

Obama will have a field day in this campaign. All he has to say is "I grew up here. I live here. I cheer for the Bears, not the Redskins(or Ravens), etc"

Chicago is the BIG city, but the suburbs, such as Evanston, etc. will go for Obama.Actually, there are more GOPers in Chicago, than there are in Evanston and such.

And Keyes will NOT attract many GOPers in Chicago. Some will gladly vote for him, some will hold their nose, and many(the Limousine GOPers of LSD)won't vote for him at all.

"I understand what people on this thread are saying when they say it's not the same as Hillary. I do see the difference, but it is a subtle one."

The only subtlety is that we hate Hillary, and like Keyes.

I agree. While I like Keyes, Obama is younger and will appeal to not only the liberal white voters but also the bulk of the black, heavily DEMONrat population. But at least it'll get Keyes out in the public eye.

The Washington Times ran an article that quoted delegates as saying "Obama and Hillary in '08, that's the ticket!"

It seems like a lot of people on here hate Keyes so much that they would prefer a Hillary/Obama ticket in 08 than see Keyes win or even do well.
