TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — As the state's top Democrats gather in Boston to nominate John Kerry as the party's candidate, a poll indicates the Democratic challenger is in a virtual dead heat with President George W. Bush among New Jersey voters.

1. New Jersey's governor may very well find himself hauled out of office in shackles sometime within the next few months.
2. As a wealthy state, New Jersey got a tremendous benefit from Bush's 2001 and 2002 tax cuts.
I am this close to packing up my family and moving out of New Jersey but I can't let the Libs in this state win and deplete the number of conervatives we have here but it's so damn expensive to live here (especially Bergen county where I am from)Jim McGreedy is killing us with his taxes.
I've been predicting that NJ is the "longshot" state for Bush. With an unpopular Dem governor, its one to watch.
I think it will be somewhat closer than that in Jersey this time thanks to 9/11, but I just can't realistically see it happening.
The Republican "investment" in New Jersey will consist of two freebies ... advertizing in the Philadelphia market (because Pennsylvania is in play) which will spill over to southern New Jersey, and the convention in New York City which will spill over to northern New Jersey. In terms of appearances, I expect Rudy and other surrogates will make some appearances. As to whether Bush or Cheney will following the convention, I kind of doubt it. I think the GOP will treat New Jersey as a low-cost opportunity. If either Bush or Cheney do make appearances in New Jersey, it will be because the state is still in play. The problem with this, is that it might energize the Democrats. The secret to the sudden GOP popularity in New Jersey is the corruption in the McGreedy state government. The people of the state are disheartened, and turn-out could be low among Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents. An unriled-up, disheartened opposition may be the key to a surprise Bush pick-up on election day. Of course, this information must be kept from secret from the Democrats who are still trying to figure out how to take North Carolina away from us.
I find it difficult to believe that Kerry is ahead if he is having trouble in New Jersey. I am beginning to think the polls are nothing but lies...an attempt to skew the election.
McGreevey has made such a mess of things and now his biggest financial supporter and nominee to head the Sports and Exposition Authority got caught setting up his brother-in-law with a prostitute and mailed the video to his sister in an effort to blackmail the guy into not testifying before a grand jury.
Bush should make an appearance in 100,000-population Hamilton, Mercer County, where the voters got rid of the Republicans a few years back and are now screaming about the high taxes and all the McGreevey hacks added to the town payroll.
And he'd call it "America having a temper tantrum" or something similar explaining it just like the networks explained the 94 congressional elections. Never could just be an honest win on policy.
Bush wins NJ..wouldn't that be a wonderful thing.
I was driving home from work on election night 2000, I had already voted. I heard the radio (ABC) news annouce that Georgia was too close to call...Georgia! I remember I was shocked and horrified because if Bush couldn't carry Georgia then he was going to lose big time. Of course, we know Bush won Georgia by double digits. The mainstream media tried to help Gore by not calling Bush states in a timely manner. The polls were still open in other states, and I firmly believe Gore would not have won the popular vote except that Repubs believed it was all over and didn't vote in various states. No matter what reports we hear, let's all vow to vote, vote, vote!
At this point in 1980 nobody thought New York would go to Reagan. We were all surprised that West Virginia, one of only six states Carter won in 1980, went for Dubya last time. It's still very early in the campaign season. Anything from a narrow Kerry victory to a substantial Bush victory is still plausible.
We can safely assume of course that DC and Mass are safe for Kerry!
Second, Bush and Kerry will be advertizing heavily in the Philadelphia market, which covers the lower half of New Jersey, too. If Bush's commercials are effective, it could really help Bush in NJ.
Patrick, I hope you're right! The GOP convention in NYC will be very close-by and I hope it exudes positive energy and optimism and DETERMINATION that 9-11 will not be repeated. After what we are seeing in Boston- the massive controls- the silly absurd out-of-touch stalwarts like TeddyK and the nutjobs like TerAyza- I think the GOP has a chance to make a BIG move up in the polls with our convention.

Wait a moment! Do you think the pollsters here are trying to fake W out so that he can spend MEGA BUCKS in advertising knowing all along LURCH has a sizable lead there? SOMETHING stinks in NJ....get a rope!
I am originally a Jersey girl and have visited there twice in the past month. One thing that strikes me as I drive on 80, GSP and the Turnpike is the flags on overpasses and especially all the stickers on cars that are flags or say "God Bless America" or "united We Stand" - you have to believe these people are voting for W. Plus, I didn't see ONE Kerry sticker during either of my trips, and I was in Middlesex County most of the time.
I listen to the required NJ 101.5 and they don't seem to like Kerry much, and they are the designated "New Jersey station" and when I lived there I really felt that they helped Whitman win in the 80's. As a matter of fact, the NJ 101.5 News Director went on the work as Whitman's Communications Director (or some other integral part of her staff.)
I truly beleive W has a chance in NJ. Oh, and when I was there I passed out my Bush-Cheney stickers to my family!
The next great movement in American politics will not be Conservative or Liberal, but Reform. The only thing that divides Conservative and Liberal is the wedge issues, and people are starting to realize that these issues are held out to distract. Like a magicians trick, it is the hand that is not moving that is the one you have to watch.
People don't trust politicians anymore, because politicans lie, cheat and steal as a matter of course. McGreedy's shenanigans in New Jersey are only the latest and most crass example.
The Pubbies may pick up New Jersey this fall because of McGreedy's spectacular self immolation, but unless they present a more credible reason to trust them, it will rebound against them in the next election. The first political party that can credibly say that they are not crooks will dominate politics for the forseeable future.
IMHO.
But NJ had been moving back toward 10 point territory. I'm very glad to see this, and while I agree with you, Dales, that this may be closer than most realize, I just won't let myself believe it until November 2!
This just in: Kerry has changed his VP candidate. His new running mate is Robert Torricelli.
