TRENTON, N.J. (AP) As the state's top Democrats gather in Boston to nominate John Kerry as the party's candidate, a poll indicates the Democratic challenger is in a virtual dead heat with President George W. Bush among New Jersey voters.

I would think McGreevey's troubles are hurting Kerry in NJ. And there were NJ residents from as far south as Trenton killed on 9/11, so it affected much of the state. However, NJ is also where the Democrats perfected the "knock and drag" program for turning out the black vote, and where they distrbuted flyers in 2000 with a Photoshopped picture of Bush standing in front of a Confederate flag. If it is a neck and neck race in the polls, Kerry will win due to the black turnout effort and vote fraud.
Oh my. Kerry +2 in NJ.
As a warning. The FD poll is the only one that shows Bush ahead. There is the silly Rasmussen poll from the end of June that has Kerry up ten and a Quinnipac poll that has F'n up six. I still say it is a long shot at best.
Among REGISTERED VOTERS no less.
Commercials are running here. Cheney raised quite a bit of money at a fundraiser here a few weeks ago and I know Bush has been active with the faith based initiative in parts of NJ.
"They called Florida for Gore 52 minutes before the polls closed but would not call states won by Bush for hours after the polls closed."
The panhandle of Florida is one hour behind the rest of the State, however we can't be like liberals, folks. We have to get our facts straight. You are incorrect trying to say that any of the networks called the race around 52 minutes early that election night; what is correct is the FACT that NBC was the first to make the call for Gore 10 minutes and 20 seconds before the Florida panhandle polls were closed. Here are the on-air times for the network calls for Gore, Retraction of Gore, Bush, and Retraction of Bush for Florida on that election night/morning.
CLOSING STATE CBS ABC NBC/MSNBC FOX VNS WINNER ====================================================================================================== 7:00 PM Florida: 7:50:11 PM 8:02 PM, 7:49:40 PM* 7:52 PM, 7:52 PM Gore Retraction 10:00:00 PM 10:16 PM Retraction Bush 2:17:52 AM 2:20 AM 2:17:30 AM 2:16 AM* Bush Retraction 3:57:49 AM* 4:00 AM 4:02:00 AM 4:05 AM Retraction

If the call had been made at 8:00pm EST exactly, it still would have cost Bush votes as many still in line might have just left, so condititioned are many to believe everything they see and hear on television...
dvwjr
In 2000 Bush showed up in CA, although it was an unlikely state for him to win. I'll bet he shows in NJ just to see if he can tip a scale and bleed Kerry's $.
Do whaever you can to help Bush there... If Kerry has to defend NJ< it means we can take other states...
dont give Kerry are free pass on the Garden State!
Negative. I believe it was along the lines of twelve minutes early, certainly not 52.
Some were pretty mocking in their responses. :-)
Exactly!
It's consistent with numerous other NJ polls.
I've been saying this for months..President Bush has a real chance in NJ and if he wins the state, the election is probably over.
New Jersey is the second wealthiest state in the nation (per capita income) and in the top four for household income. Three of the richest counties in the entire United States are in New Jersey. There is a lot of Republican territory here and the only reason the state polls democrat is because of the heavily populated urban areas and some counties (e.g Monmouth) that have a large number of still liberal NYC transplants. Now some of those liberal ex-NYC'ers and other New Jerseyans saw their friends and neighbors brutally murdered on 911 and it has had an effect. It is only because of the honor and tremendous restraint of most New Jerseyans that portions of Paterson and Jersey City were not burned to the ground on 912. That having been said however, security and fighting terror are serious issues here and I think most New Jerseyan's want a leader who says what he means and means what he says instead of a panderer. Many see George Bush as a strong leader and are willing to keep him as captain on our ship of state.
Unfortunately it seems like the Pres' team in NJ is dragging its feet and I know several people who contacted to volunteer and have been told there is no place for them to go....they are frustrated.
This surprises you? I thought you of all folks would know NJ has been close for months now.
I understand that OR and MN both have "Gay Marriage Initiatives" on the November ballot, meaning that a couple of hundred thousand faith-based Christians (many who sat out 2000) will show up to vote their conscience--and bring Kerry down.
Tell me about It. I live near Montclair, and KERRY bumper stickers aobund.
Though I was in Wayne last night saw 4 for GWB, and none for the French guy.
I voted for Retraction, so I guess I won twice.....
