A small pipe bomb packed with gunpowder and BBs exploded in a subway station last night, injuring a transit cop and throwing several blocks near Times Square into chaos.
A police spokesman insisted that authorities do not believe that the incident was terrorism but federal officials, including the Secret Service and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating, it was learned.
The officer, whose name was withheld, was standing near a staircase leading to the A, C and E trains at 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue at around 8 p.m., when he saw a burning knapsack, police said.
He quickly pushed two commuters to safety, but as he was calling for assistance, the bag exploded, cops said.

So we can all go back to what we were doing, knowing that anyone in the subway who was terrified when the explosion occurred was simply overreacting.
The good news is that, as tight as the job market might be, anyone can apparently get a job as a "police spokesman" or an "authority".
Sheesh, whata maroon.
Just stay away from the edge of the tracks and if you smell anyone just move.
I respectfully disagree. While this is certainly a crime, terrorism is more than a simple crime. Terrorism involves a political agenda with an aim to intimidate/cow/unnerve a society.
Until we know the who & why of this particular act, we can not conclude it was an act of terrorism.
Nor can we exclude it, as the police are apparently doing.
From the attached ABC article:
"But now police are now investigating whether the transit cop who was hurt in the incident was somehow involved in causing it in the first place."

Also note that they have not released his name yet.
Excuse me, but burning bags full of exploding pipe bombs are EXACTLY what terrorism is! Gotta be a fricken DemocRat!

" With the Republican National Convention just a few weeks away, the NYPD is on high alert. They pulled out all of the stops last night to check out the blast, which they are blaming on fireworks discovered in a bag. But now police are now investigating whether the transit cop who was hurt in the incident was somehow involved in causing it in the first place."
"Investigators say the device contained gunpowder and b-b's."
Wonder why they won't release his name. Wanna bet it's something like Ali or Muhammad or Hassan?
Where you gonna find a twerpy white kid from Hempstead?
They should move the Republican Convention to someplace like North Dakota or Idaho. Far away from all the leftist controlled cities.
What in the hell was it, then?
Maybe he is like the nurse who injects her patients with drugs to make them ill so she can be the "hero".
When was the last time a pipe bomb went off in a NY subway?
Of course this was a dry run. Let's be realistic here.
Leftists, jihadis .... it's difficult to discern a measurable difference any more.
Could this have been someone trying to object to the rule that police can't search the commies' bags unless there is a reason to be suspicious? (Wheels turning overtime here, I admit.)
Dry run for terrorists?
Or for DemoRATs who will soon be protesting Bush?
Although I agree, it won't happen in the PoliticallyCorrectStatesofAmerica in 2004. Deportation would be the most we could expect if it is an islamonazi.
What of the possibility that a few terror guys with videocams recorded the NYPD & FDNY response protocols to this type of incident. It would make the real thing more effective if they had response procedures to plan against.
Maybe. It could also be that they don't want to create the 2004 version of Richard Jewell.
Something is strange here. The article says it happened at 8pm. but Times Square was full of police cars with flashers going around 6:30 as I was walking back to Penn Station.
Not sure what to make of it, unless the Post has is mistaken about the time.
