A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....07-19-04....Military Monday
Billie, The Mayor

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Didn't know they could drink coffee and then shoot off like a firework until one of those little tan aggressive house spiders took a slug of some of my coffee and did just that.. launched like an 8 legged missile.

Even better was the half hour battle with three huge wasp nests today.
Completely laid waste to them without incurring any damage myself.

On the lookout Marines scope out downtown in surprise practice drill

Staff photos - Greg Wolf A Camp Lejeune Marine (right) with the 2nd Marine Reconnaissance Battalion participates Sunday in an urban warfare training exercise in downtown Wilmington.

Joya Raja wasn't sure what to make of the men in green T-shirts and headsets warily making their way down both sides of Front Street on Sunday. A film shoot, perhaps?

"I just figured it was something to do with the movie industry," the recent college graduate said.

The men themselves weren't making things much clearer. "Just taking a stroll to a bar" was the stock reply to curious passersby. They kept backs to the wall and eyes on everyone, radioing to each other observations such as a store worker speaking into a cell phone, the size of an alley or a suspicious pair of men on scooters.

"It's definitely a little unnerving, especially since they don't say what they're doing," said Brent Stimmel, who watched the men from outside the Cape Fear Coffee and Tea Co.

As it turns out, the 18 men were apparently members of the elite 2nd Marine Reconnaissance Battalion, practicing for urban patrols ahead of a September deployment to Iraq. Many wore T-shirts sporting the reconnaissance motto, "Swift. Silent. Deadly."

A press information officer at Camp Lejeune called the battalion the eyes and ears of their division but could not confirm the men were part of it. The men had reported to the Wilmington Police Department that they would be practicing downtown.

Two of the group's leaders, who would not give names or rank, said the rare real-world exercise on a busy weekend full of tourists made an excellent change from the routine of on-base practice.

One, a tall, muscle-bound specimen who looked as if he could be especially swift, silent and deadly, said it didn't matter that downtown Wilmington looked nothing like an Iraqi city. The stares from passersby, the traffic, the potential sniper nests, the unfamiliar nooks and buildings are all things they'll face in Iraq, he said.

The two leaders said they were pleased with how their men had communicated with each other as they steadily made their way down Front Street from Cape Fear Community College to Dock Street. Several homeless men had been paid to act as "informants." The leaders said their men quickly communicated the information to other Marines.

In a hostile setting, the most dangerous part of the route would have been the intersection of Market and Front streets, surrounded by high rooftops and windows, said one of the leaders.

"There are so many danger areas to cover," he said.

The exercise drew mixed reviews from downtown observers. Some found it unsettling to see a mysterious paramilitary-looking group going down the street, others found it very interesting. Oliver Held, a tourist from near Cologne, Germany, had his video camera out as the men filed past Kingoff's Jewelers "We don't have this in Germany," he said.

And others were glad to see the men were getting the practice.

"They have to get a feel for different types of reconnaissance missions," said Charles Brandon, a former Navy Corpsmen who was attached with Marines.

Near Dock and Market streets, the men assembled to review their performances. And when it was over, they turned down the intensity. Glares gave way to smiles. Some changed shirts. And the "taking a stroll to a bar" line turned out to be true.

"Our actual objective was the Blue Post," one joked, referring to a drinking hole in one of the alley's that had previously concerned them as a danger spot. "We're all going in there for a drink."

Mosquito are somewhat harder to take care of.
Malathion works wonders, but people whine about it's use..

Dear Heavenly Father,

We ask that You place Your loving arms of protection around our troops. Please bless them and their families for their selfless acts to protect our freedom. Allow us the humility to thank these wonderful people whenever possible for all that they do for us to show that we do not take their acts of courage for granted.

We ask these favors as Your humble and contrite servants in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

((((((HUGS)))))) to all on Military Monday!

That they do.
Seems they care more about mosquitos than they do people.
Also seems that a woman died because of a mosquito bite.
