John Kerry's younger brother Cameron will be the presidential candidate's emissary to Israel this week.
And it's a job that turns out to have surprising resonance for the 53-year-old Boston Brahmin, who converted to Judaism in 1983 when he married his wife, Kathy Weinman.
"It's an opportunity for Cam Kerry and his wife to develop a deeper understanding of Jewish life, and to get a firsthand look to see how Israel is coping with the challenges of terrorism," said Kerry campaign spokesman Luis Vizcaino.
It's also an opportunity for the younger Kerry to get in touch with some unexpected roots.
The Kerry brothers learned last year their grandfather, Frederick Kerry, was born as Fritz Kohn, the son of Jewish parents in a town now part of the Czech Republic. Kohn, who came to the U.S. in 1905, converted to Catholicism when he changed his name to Kerry in 1902.
The Kerrys knew their paternal grandmother was born a Jew and converted to Catholicism when she married Kerry's granddad. Their grandfather's past was a surprise.
Though his trip is billed as a private visit, Cameron Kerry, a Harvard-educated Boston lawyer, will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, campaign officials said yesterday.
He also plans to see Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as opposition Labor Party leader Shimon Peres.
Cameron Kerry will be joined by his wife and Sen. Kerry's Israeli affairs adviser, Jay Footlik, who has lived in Israel and served on the staff at the Peres Center for Peace.
This story is a perfect metaphor for the Democratic party ... cheap, interest-group pandering that plays to ethnic identity without touching the real issue at stake.

Kerry's sending his brother to Israel. He's sending Edwards to Iraq. He's been to Vietnam (have you heard?). THAT's his foreign policy?
Talk about pointless, pandering gestures! It's tough to top sending Edwards to Iraq so he'll look pro-military, but this one is even more desperate.

Perhaps the the fact that they had always known that their paternal grandmother had been born and raised as a Jewess could have tugged on Cameron's soul strings a bit.
