A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Gotta love that little doggie!!
LOL

I actually HAD a magnificent tree house in Coral Gables, Florida in a huge pithecolobium tree that had thick, swinging vines.

Betcha you'd have loved to play Sheena, Queen of the Jungle with us back then..:))

NCO rescues two people from river

by Capt. Brandon Lingle
Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs

7/1/2004 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) -- When a staff sergeant from the systems programs office at the Air Force Personnel Center here went to a local river for a relaxing tubing trip recently, he was not expecting to save the lives of two people from the rain-swollen waterway.

Floating down the usually calm river on an innertube is a common pastime in nearby New Braunfels.

But a normal day on the river came to an abrupt end for Staff Sgt. Boyd Myers, a Web applications developer, when he reached the bottom of a manmade water slide portion of the river called the "Tube Chute."

"Normally the chute isn't that intense, but with the higher water it was much faster than normal," he said.

Sergeant Myers had just reached the bottom of the chute and was caught in an eddy when he heard frantic screams from a nearby woman. Then he realized that an 8- or 9-year-old girl had fallen off her tube and was caught in the rapids.

"I saw the little girl come up for a moment, but she was knocked back under water by other tubers and then became trapped under her own tube," said the sergeant, a frequent tuber. "I will never forget the look of fear that was on her face. That's when I decided to leave my tube and try to swim through the rapids to get her."

"He dove under the water, grabbed the little girl, battled through the currents and the people, and swam her to the side," said DeAnn Little, another tuber who witnessed the rescue.

"Luckily, I was able to get to the girl by swimming underwater," Sergeant Myers said. "The current under the surface almost brought me right to her, but I had to fight the currents to get her to the side."

Upon realizing that the girl's mother was also caught in the undertow, he swam back into the churning water to attempt to rescue her as well.

"When he got to the mother, she was panicking and basically wrapped him up," Ms. Little said. "He was somehow able to get her over to the wall too."

"Rescuing the mom was a lot more difficult," Sergeant Myers said. "I had to fight the current to get to her."

Had he not acted as he did, the little girl and possibly the mother would have drowned, Ms. Little said.

"I know that anyone would do what I did; I just happened to be there," Sergeant Myers said. "The fact that I may have helped a child to be able to play with her friends today is more reward than anything I could receive." (Courtesy of AFPC News Service)

Great job, Mama_Bear! I hope your gigantic fireworks display didn't put too big a dent in the Finest's budget. :)

What a spectacular fireworks show, that is just amazing!

Thank you. (Don't tell anyone, but it is sort of a warmed over re-run of the fireworks display I posted two years ago. I just didn't have time to do new one.......but fireworks are fireworks, right? LOL)

Am so happy to have you back with us here at FreeRepublic Mama Bear. Have to admit I was was hoping you would love the South so much that you would decide to stay.

I am happy to be back! Aqua, I fell in love with Virginia and North and South Carolina! If you've ever been to "golden" California, especially the central valley, you know that we don't have lush green trees and vegetation everywhere. California is beautiful in it's own way, but I enjoyed so much the green lush landscape back east. Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains was just beautiful. Thick forests and breathtaking vistas! We picked a perfect destination for our vacation. :-)

An absolutely beautiful presentation, as you always do, Lori!

Thank you, (((((((Maggie))))))).

We missed you, and are glad you got to see a lot of America up close in the past two weeks.

It's nice to be missed and nice to be back!

I think that JK and I chose the best vacation destinations this time. It wasn't a relaxing vacation (like a cruise), but what we got to see and experience was wonderful. It gave me chills touring our Capitol, the war memorials (shed some tears there), the Civil War battlefield at Manassas, Colonial Williamsburg, Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie in historic Charleston. History has always been a passion of mine and to actually be there, where it happened, was a great experience. Not wanting to miss anything, we walked miles and miles each day.....and we returned home tired but happy travelers.

I think next time we will tour New England, where we both have roots going back to the pilgrims. But for now, I need a vacation from our vacation. :-)

The very first official act of the Continental Congress was a call to prayer.

Thank you for posting this important reminder from our past. It is a FACT that God, His commandments, and faith in Him was the Rock upon which our country was founded, regardless of how some would like to change our history (and our future course).

Perhaps you can't see clearly the dog in the basket in today's calendar. It's the dog I got for Billie for her birthday (having stolen it fair and square from St.Louie1) that Meekie tried to steal. It came back to me!

LOL!! Hi Free, long time no see! :-)

Happy Independence Day to you.
