WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. cinematographers and other film industry workers have asked the Bush administration to take action against Canadian, Australian and other government filmmaking subsidies that they say have lured away tens of thousands of jobs."We have been harmed by runaway production of films, videos and television shows that are being made in foreign countries because of ... unfair trade practices," the Film and Television Action Committee said in comments filed this week with the Commerce Department's Unfair Trade Practices Task Force.

Die, unions, die.
Booray for Bollywood!
Don't let your hatred for unions blind you to what the article says. Other governments aren't playing by fair rules of free trade. They subsidise job industries in their country to steal opportinities for Americans. This isn't a "level playing field". We lose American jobs and you cheer.
You were faster....
Yup, Bollywood - India is hiring in advance of expected outourcing contracts !
It doesn't matter to me where these movies are made. They're all unadulterated crap that I don't watch anyway.
It's getting to the point where almost ANYONE can film/edit their own basic movie.
In fact, I've just been inspired to film next year's Academy Award winner, "FReepers!"
Hollywood has priced itself out of the marketplace.
Lets start up an new movie industry in Minot, North Dakota.
They also accused Australia of offering "lavish" tax breaks and other incentives to entice movie production.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I can see why this makes those big mouths nervous. If they can't use their artistic medium and the money they make from it to push their political persuasions, why they will just be less powerful. And less wealthy.
I got a hankerin' to go out this evening and watch an indie film.
Every place except Hollywood and maybe NYC subsidise the film industry in some way. Cities like to have film made there, it brings in a lot of money, it hilights good parts of your city, and gives a little free advertising. I doubt Canada and Australia are providing any more subsidising for films than any non-tinsletown in America does. On top of that they don't have the silly union rules which a lot of directors are balking at these days (Stanley Kubrik swore off of making movies in America because he liked to write, direct and edit, according to the union rules at least two people must get the credit for those three jobs, so they wanted him to hire an editor and give him credit even if the guy never made a single splice).
Union dorks are losing jobs, that's always worth cheering.
Wonder how many of them drink Australian wines?
Does anyone else find it ironic that an industry that hates conservatives, especially our President, now begs for his administration to protect their jobs? Jobs which will likely produce more hate-filled rhetoric towards conservatives, Christians and heterosexuals.
While I understand their complaints about unfair practices in their industry, and I will say I believe their arguments to an extent, I find it difficult to pity these folks when they spend so much of their lives ridiculing MY beliefs and MY elected officials. Now they want the very people they dispise to help them continue with their bashing ways.
I can't have sympathy for a group of people that pay somebody $20 an hour to hold their water bottles or a few $1000 a month to people who might work a few hours a day holding up a piece of plastic shading or whatever.
Not too long ago, George Lucas was having serious problems with the unions, and he ended up doing a lot of his shooting overseas (along with a lot of other big directors). I don't know if he was one of the first, bu tI noticed a lot of big productions eventually went down that path.
These people are putting themselves out of a job, I can't sympathize at all. If I'm doing a movie and Person A wants $100 an hour to do something menial, and I goto Person B who says they want the same amount, and so on, I would goto another country. Going to a right-to-work state will still end up causing problems eventually, since it all goes through California and the unions would try to cause problems there as well.
Other countries offer incentives to shoot there and no unions to bully producers....What a concept!!!! ;)
Regards, Ivan

I agree, it is ironic. But not unexpected, given that these Hollywood prostitutes have demonstrated time and again that they have no honor, shame, or sense.
