Did they ever change the name of of this place? From Custer Battlefield National Monument, I believe it was. The Lakota Sioux wanted it changed to Crazy Horse Battlefield or Sitting Bull Battlefield, since they were the winners.......

To the 7th Calvary. They were not prepared for what they ran into at Little Big Horn, but fought bravely.

LBH is an abject lesson to all Military Leaders on what can and will go wrong on a battlefield.

I've always found the final chapter of this story the most interesting of all. The Sioux fled north across the border after the Federal troops became more aggressive against them in the aftermath of the battle at the Little Bighorn. The warriors of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull were eventually rounded up by -- count 'em -- six Royal Canadian Mounties and moved to a reservation somewhere out in what is now Alberta or Saskatchewan.

"A memorial planned to commemorate the Indians who died in the battle promises a neutral interpretation, although its critics charge that it tips the scale too far the other way."

Why in the world does the Park need to get involved in championing one side or the other...seems like presenting the facts would be enough.

"and events were interpreted in favor of Custer and his men."

Kerry has even chimed in on this and said before Custer lost he actually won.

THE HistoryCHannel did a great forensic analysis of the battlefield in the past couple of years. It pretty much destroyed most of the previous accounts of what really happened.

If I remember correctly, they concluded Custer died in the first ten or fifteen minuts.

Custer stupidly campaigned against the Presidential candidate that won election.

His reward was being sent to LBH without Gattlin guns. He foolishly threw his men into a fight where they were outnumbered 10-1.

Several times in the preceeding years, Custer did have great military victories. LBH is a cruel, and absurd choice to be his memorial.

Scout: Mr Custer, Mr Custer, I have bad news and good news.

Custer: What's the bad news?

Scout: We're surrounded by Indians and we're all going to die.

Custer: What's the good news?

Scout: We don't have to ride back through Nebraska.

Custer was the only man in the battle who got what he deserved. His ego bit him on the butt big time!

Even when I first heard this story as a child, I wondered WHY is custer revered instead of simply ignored as an stupid arrogant fool who had all his troops killed.

His name should be erased from history except in the war colleges to teach what NOT to do.

Ditto.

Garry Owen (midi)

Let Bacchus’ sons be not dismayed,
But join with me each jovial blade,
Come booze and sing, and lend your aid,
To help me with the chorus.

Chorus;
Instead of spa we’ll drink down ale,
And pay the reck’ning on the nail,
No man for debt shall go to jail,
For Garryowen in glory.

We are the boys that take delight in,
Smashing the Limerick lights when lighting
Through the streets like sporters fighting,
And clearing all before us.

Chorus

We’ll break windows, we’ll bread down doors
The watch knock down by threes and fours,
The let the doctors work their cures
And tinker up out bruises.

Chorus

We’ll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
We’ll make the Mayor and Sheriffs run,
We are the boys no man dares dun,
If he regards a whole skin.

Chorus

Our hearts so stout have got us fame,
for soon t’is known from whence we came
Where’re we go they dread the name
Of Garryowen in glory.

The poor soldierds of the Seventh Cavalry deserve our respect and honor. They died for their country. Unfortunately they were victims of one man's ego and incompetence.

The equally brave Souix and Cheyenne deserve our respect and honor as they died for THEIR country.

Custer deserves a grave in a dunghill. He was a vicious martinent, an arrogant fool, and criminally incompetent.
His entire service record demonstrates the behavior of a man enamoured with his own ego and greatness, reckless fearlessness and total disregard for any prudence in warfare.

Putting that man in charge of an independent command was a catastrophic error.

And for all you lovers of "Squaw-Killer Yellow Hair" out there, there are just as many military experts who agree with that assessment as don't. Probably more.

God Bless the American soldier that died making the western USofA safe for settlement. As for the aboriginies they get all the Gambling casinos. They finally show they are no different than the "Whiteman"! If they had cooperated they could have opened the first blackjack table in 1876.

My second cousin 3 times removed was Sgt Daniel Kanipe who was in Company C and carried the first message "Benteen - Come on. Big village. Be quick. Bring packs. P.S. Bring packs. W.W. Cooke". He ended up on Reno Hill fighting with Company H and survived. Daniel died in 1926 and is burried in Marion Cemetery in McDowell County, North Carolina. His wife was the widow of one of the soldiers who died at LBH.

I find battlegrounds to be very spiritual places. The Battleground of the Little Big Horn is no exception. You can almost hear the shouts. We will be visiting it again in July.
