Iran seeks swap of Brits for suicide attackers

Report says 40 Revolutionary Guard 'volunteers' held by UK

Iran apprehended British military personnel and Navy vessels earlier this week in order to secure release of 40 "suicide operations volunteers" held by the UK, according to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard source.

The source told the London Arabic-language daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the British Army command in Iraq received the demand from the Revolutionary Guard, reported the Middle East Media Research Institute.

According to the source, the content of the message was very simple: "Release our comrades, whom you are holding, and we will release your soldiers."

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Nine people, six of them insurgents, are dead in fresh attacks in Iraq on Saturday underscoring deep political and religious friction ahead of next weeks transfer of power.

Attacks in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, occurred only two days after U.S. forces routed insurgents who were part of a widespread offensive that killed about 100 people nationwide.

This time, nine died, including six insurgents as rebels targeted political offices a police station and a government building.

Elsewhere, insurgents killed two Iraqi National Guardsmen and a police officer about 20 miles south of Baghdad.

A car bomb in the Kurdish stronghold of Irbil injured the culture minister of the pro-American Kurdistan Democratic Party and killed his bodyguard. Fifteen others were hurt.

And the U.S. military announced the death of a soldier but didn't say when.
