Iran seeks swap of Brits for suicide attackers

Report says 40 Revolutionary Guard 'volunteers' held by UK

Iran apprehended British military personnel and Navy vessels earlier this week in order to secure release of 40 "suicide operations volunteers" held by the UK, according to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard source.

The source told the London Arabic-language daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the British Army command in Iraq received the demand from the Revolutionary Guard, reported the Middle East Media Research Institute.

According to the source, the content of the message was very simple: "Release our comrades, whom you are holding, and we will release your soldiers."

Phosgene is a primitive "Choking" agent. Hold your breath and get out of the cloud. Then to be sure, wash off with hot soapy water. That's what is used to decontaminate for any chemical agent, including nerve toxin.

Could both flaws be combined for a simultaneous attack?

The Internet Under Crisis Conditions: Learning from September 11

Although secondary to the human tragedy resulting from the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, telecommunications issues were significant that day both in terms of damage (physical as well as functional) and of mounting response and recovery efforts. The Internet has come to be a major component of the nation’s (and the world’s) communications and information infrastructure. People rely on it for business, social, and personal activities of many kinds, and government depends on it for communications and transactions with the media and the public. Thus there is interest in how the Internet performed and was used on September 11. Unlike the situation with longer-standing telecommunications services (notably the public telephone network), there are few regulations, policies, or practices related to the Internet’s functioning in emergency situations. Nor are there many publicly available data to help policy makers or the industry itself assess the Internet’s performance—either on a continuing basis or in the aftermath of a crisis. No regular system exists for reporting failures and outages, nor is there agreement on metrics of performance.

Some experiences are shared informally among network operators or in forums such as the North American Network Operators Group (NANOG), but that information is not readily accessible for national planning or research purposes. The decentralized architecture of the Internet—although widely characterized as one of the Internet’s strengths—further confounds the difficulty of collecting comprehensive data about how the Internet is performing. It is therefore unsurprising that no definitive analyses exist on the impact of September 11 on the Internet, though a few conflicting anecdotal reports about its performance that day—such as several presentations at NANOG indicating relatively little effect and press accounts suggesting that the impact was severe —have appeared.

Responding to an initial request in early 2002 from the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group in Data Communication (ACM SIGCOMM), the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) established the Committee on the Internet Under Crisis Conditions: Learning from the Impact of September 11.[3] The study’s goals were twofold: to organize an exploratory workshop for gathering data and accounts of experiences pertinent to the impact of September 11 on the Internet, and to prepare a report that summarizes the Internet’s performance that day and offers conclusions on better preparing for and responding to future emergencies.

"We had testimony a couple of months ago from the past president of United, and current president of American Airlines that kind of shocked us all," Lehman told me. "They said under oath that indeed the Department of Transportation continued to fine any airline that was caught having more than two people of the same ethnic persuasion in a secondary line for line for questioning, including and especially, two Arabs."

Wait a minute. So if airline security had three suspicious Arab guys they had had to let one go because they'd reached a quota?

That was it, Lehman said, "because of this political correctness that became so entrenched in the 1990s, and continues in current administration. No one approves of racial profiling, that is not the issue. The fact is that Norwegian women are not, and 85-year-old women with aluminum walkers are not, the source of the terrorist threat. The fact is that our enemy is the violent Islamic extremism and the overwhelming number of people that one need to worry about are young Arab males, and to ask them a couple of extra questions seems to me to be common sense, yet if an airline does that in numbers that are more than proportionate to their number in particular line, then they get fined and that is why you see so many blue haired old ladies and people that are clearly not of Middle Eastern extraction being hauled out in such numbers because otherwise they get fined."

Bush faces a hostile reception in Ireland
International Herald Tribune ^ | 6/26/04 | Elisabeth Bumiller/NYTimes

Posted on 06/25/2004 5:23:18 PM EDT by The Bandit

ENNIS, Ireland President George W. Bush was set to arrive at the heavily guarded Dromoland Castle in County Clare on Friday night as the authorities braced for what were expected to be large demonstrations across Ireland against the U.S. occupation of Iraq.
In contrast to the jubilant welcomes accorded to Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy, Bush's reception was already developing as frosty, if not outright hostile. Widespread opposition to the Iraq war and revulsion at the Abu Ghraib prison scandal have turned a large portion of Irish popular opinion against him.

Big protests were expected in Dublin and in Shannon, where Air Force One was to land before Bush headed to the EU-U.S. summit at Dromoland Castle. Smaller protests were expected for the cities of Galway, Sligo, Waterford and Tralee in County Kerry.

"Fury and fear as town is turned into a fortress," said the headline in the Irish Examiner. The newspaper quoted the mayor of Shannon as saying that the town's residents were being made into potential targets for a terrorist attack.

REMINDER, Clinton Owns Property In Ireland:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=%2Fnews%2F2003%2F07%2F11%2Fnclin11.xml

Clinton tees up his dream flat in Ireland
By Thomas Harding, Ireland Correspondent
(Filed: 11/07/2003)

Bill Clinton yesterday united his two loves, Ireland and golf, by buying a two-bedroom apartment that overlooks a Ryder Cup venue.

The property comes with full membership for two to the prestigious Kildare Hotel and Country Club - better known as the K Club - 30 miles south-west of Dublin where an 18-hole round costs £190 and first year membership is £60,000.

The former American president, who has called Ireland his second home, struck a deal with an estate agent friend for an £850,000 flat while playing golf in Northern Ireland last weekend.

Ref 675:

A few threads back, we observed that websites who kept an eye on the terrorists tended to be taken offline by DOS attacks about 24-48 hours before an attack.

The last time this happened was before the Madrid bombings. I've been keeping a mental note on it and waiting to see if it becomes a trend.

It is the suggestion that everyone can become a Registrar of voters, and then go out and enroll others to vote.

It was done at the Court House In Arizona.

I did many years ago in Wellton. Have not done so here and won't now, as I don't go out.

And I'm further south from you guys and I've commented to several folks over the past month or so that the increase in CHP on freeways and police/sherrif/etc. on surface streets has been AMAZING! I'm sure they'd connect to a crack down on speeders with school getting out and summer travel post Memorial Day...but it really has been unlike what I've ever seen before. They are everywhere...and oodles of them...not just one along a stretch of road, but 2, 3, more...all in a short distance of a few miles, at most. Like you've mentioned seeing...

I will need to read your earlier links on Venezuela, this is like Cuba, so close and we don't know what is coming.

Do I understand your post as meaning you are going to Venezuela? Is it safe?

Now I will need to add you to my worry list. You will be careful won't you?

Please educate us, your knowledge will be far better than any reporter article with an agenda.

The Mike Reagan radio show, guest host is talking about Cuba this hour, but it is not clear enough for me to hear well.

He did say that some had gone 6 months with out meat being available and fish is not, as castro will not allow the Cuban people to have boats for fishing. The fear of them escaping.
