Iran seeks swap of Brits for suicide attackers

Report says 40 Revolutionary Guard 'volunteers' held by UK

Iran apprehended British military personnel and Navy vessels earlier this week in order to secure release of 40 "suicide operations volunteers" held by the UK, according to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard source.

The source told the London Arabic-language daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the British Army command in Iraq received the demand from the Revolutionary Guard, reported the Middle East Media Research Institute.

According to the source, the content of the message was very simple: "Release our comrades, whom you are holding, and we will release your soldiers."

Rift Valley fever

Rift Valley Fever (RVF), at least in the African country of Kenya, has been well known for over 60 years. As early as 1913, a disease fitting the description of RVF was blamed for the loss of sheep in the Rift Valley in Kenya. However, it was not until scientists studied an outbreak of the disease in 1931 that a virus was isolated and shown to cause the disease. Since that time, major outbreaks of RVF have been noted throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with occasional outbreaks noted in other parts of the Africa continent. For example, in Egypt, several hundred people were infected and thousands died from RVF during a violent epidemic of this disease in 1977-78.

RVF-El Niño Link

Using data from Earth-orbiting environmental satellites that simultaneously measure ocean temperature and vegetation conditions, scientists have discovered that the combination of warmer-than-normal equatorial Pacific Ocean temperatures associated with El Niño and rising sea-surface temperatures in the western equatorial Indian Ocean increase rainfall over a large area of eastern Africa, leading to a dramatic green-up of vegetation. This February 1998 image illustrates the close relationship between ocean temperature (warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures are shown in red, cooler-than-normal temperatures in blue), rainfall, and their impacts on land vegetation (greener-than-normal vegetation shown in light green). By closely monitoring the vegetation in the region affected by the increased rainfall, scientists can identify likely habitats for the mosquitoes that carry the RVF virus, and provide advance warning of large-scale outbreaks of the disease.

Between October 1997 and January 1998, heavy rains drenched eastern Kenya and southern Somalia, which led to an outbreak of RVF that killed many cattle and eventually spread to the local human population. The World Health Organization estimated a total of 200-250 deaths and 89,000 cases in southern Somalia and northeastern Kenya, one of the largest outbreaks in history.

Sad, but true, few North Americans know much about South America. If there are any positives that arise from war anywhere, it is that it teaches us geography. My grandchildren didn't have any idea where Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan were......but they certainly do now!

I'm sure we will all learn alot about Venezuela and Columbia in the upcoming months. Chavez needs to be taken down.

Prayes for a safe trip for you. I hope the customs/documents inspectors are not on strike when you land. That's what happened to us our last trip. Spent five hours in line at the Sao Paolo airport!

VANCOUVER - A suspicious brown substance believed to have made riders on a Vancouver bus sick on Tuesday was found to be nothing more than pine cones mixed with mud and spices, according to police.

http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/05/26/canada/bus040526

Now how do pine cones, mud and spices make one sick????

Reminds me of that story of the guy with the gloves and the brown liquid in the bottle.

If I recall correctly, you mean the floating boat under a bridge and I believe it had some bombs and/or bomb parts on it? Louisiana, maybe?

I'm still not caught up. But this just came to my attention. I'm really surprised with the language. "Puppet", "Savage", "Propaganda", "loathe" and more.

RESISTANCE OFFENSIVE SHAKES IRAQ.
US VENGEFULLY SAVAGES AL-FALLUJAH, PREPARES ATTACK ON CITY.

Iraqi Resistance forces carried out a coordinated offensive against
puppet police and puppet government buildings across occupied Iraq on
Thursday morning. Iraqi medical sources on Thursday reported that
the toll from the day's savage fighting, that raged in at least four
major Iraqi cities – al-Fallujah, ar-Ramadi, Ba`qubah, and Mosul –
had risen to 100 dead and 320 wounded.

Local eyewitness reports put US deaths at more than 30 in the battle
around al-Fallujah alone, however. American propaganda admitted some
four American deaths throughout the country.

As evening fell, however, the local correspondent of Mafkarat al-
Islam, reported that the in view of the savage intensity of the US
bombardment, the Resistance had resolved that the neighborhoods of
ash-Shuhadà and al-`Askari were to be evacuated.

The correspondent also observed the massing of large numbers of US
troops opposite the northern side of al-Fallujah after nightfall as
the stage seemed to be set for a major military confrontation within
hours. Meanwhile cease-fire talks among al-Fallujah city
representatives, the US aggressors, and the so-called Iraqi Islamic
Party produced an agreement on a 24-hour cease fire. Given the US
record of systematically violating virtually every agreement they
sign in Iraq, it was unclear, as Thursday turned into Friday, whether
the "cease-fire" would even last until dawn.

In Baghdad the puppet so-called "ministry of health" announced that
at least 66 people were killed and 268 injured in the Resistance
offensive Thursday, but those figures did not include American
aggressor casualties. As usual, the US invaders are loathe to
publicize anything like genuine information regarding their losses.

News reports indicated that 30 puppet policemen had been killed by
the Resistance and 47 others wounded in fierce fighting in the
country.

Savage US bombing of al-Fallujah neighborhoods late Thursday
afternoon.

In a report posted at 6:30pm Thursday, Mecca time, the local
correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam in al-Fallujah reported that US
aircraft had a little while earlier carried out a furious bombing
attack on neighborhoods in the northern and northeastern parts of al-
Fallujah.

According to informed Resistance sources, the correspondent reported,
advanced US F-18 airplanes, launched from American aircraft carriers
in the Arabian Gulf, dropped their payloads on numerous neighborhoods
in the defiant city – in particular on ash-Shuhadà neighborhood, and
al-`Askari neighborhood.

Hmmm....

Forgot about that. Good memory Calpernia. Do you think the current attack is related to the stolen code? Possible I guess.

FWIU (from what I understand), the current attack focuses on a flaw in the IIS code from Microsoft. I haven't seen anything that would indicate that the stolen Cisco code is being used to propagate the attack. Not that it's not happening, I just haven't seen any reports to that effect.

It just this seems like a rather large attack and I'm wondering if it might just be a precursor to another planned attack. Perhaps some type of 'go' signal or something.

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Late Thursday, the FBI was questioning a 65-year-old man of Middle Eastern descent who was arrested at John Wayne Airport Thursday for ...

Then if you click it it does say anything about him being middle eastern like they were told to take that part out of the story. Why? So no one gets frightened or it's racist? How many times does this happen?

They may have reached their Arab quota. Airlines get fined by the Department of Transportation if they have more than two young Arab males in secondary questioning because that's discriminatory.

The security of our airlines had been sacrificed by political correctness.

THROAT CUTTERS INTERNATIONAL>

They killed a railway engineer hostage.

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - Suspected Kashmiri militants killed an engineer working for India's state-run railway and his brother by slitting their throats after holding them hostage for two days, police said on Friday.
The gruesome murders came two days before top diplomats from India and Pakistan are due to meet in New Delhi for talks on the Kashmir dispute, at the heart of half a century of enmity between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

Sudhir Kumar, working with Indian railway firm IRCON, his brother and two other men were abducted by gunmen while traveling in a car on Wednesday in Pulwama district, south of Srinagar, Kashmir's main city.

"The body of Sudhir Kumar and his brother with their throats slit were found in a Pulwama village," a police spokesman said.

Police accused Muslim rebels of the abduction and killing but said the motive was not clear. No militant group has claimed responsibility.

The two men kidnapped along with Kumar and his brother were released unharmed later on Wednesday, police said. They were Muslim. Kumar and his brother were Hindu, police said.

Authorities say violence in Indian Kashmir has steadily dropped since India and Pakistan, who have fought two wars over the Himalayan region, began a peace process last year.

But on average a half a dozen people are killed every day in shootouts and explosions in the Muslim-majority region where a separatist revolt against Indian rule began in 1989.

Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan will begin talks on Sunday, the first over Kashmir since a failed summit between Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and then Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in mid-2001

"Judah Ben Hur,"

C'mon folks, this is so obviously phony. You guys never saw the 1950's movie starring Charlton Heston called BEN HUR?" Judah Ben Hur was the name of the title character.
