Clinton rages against Dimbleby in Panorama confrontation over Lewinsky
The Sunday Telegraph ^ | June 20, 2004 | Chris Hastings and Charles Laurence

Bill Clinton loses his temper with David Dimbleby during a BBC television interview to be broadcast this week when he is repeatedly quizzed about his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

The former American president, famed for his amiable disposition, becomes visibly angry and rattled, particularly when Dimbleby asks him whether his publicly declared contrition over the affair is genuine.

His outrage at the line of questioning during the 50-minute interview, to be broadcast on Panorama on Tuesday night, lasts several minutes. It is the first time that the former President has been seen to lose his temper publicly over the issue of his sexual liaisons with Ms Lewinsky.

The President initially responds to Dimbleby's questions by launching a general attack on media intrusion. When the broadcaster persists with the question of whether the politician was truly penitent, Clinton directs his anger towards Dimbleby.

The atmosphere, which was initially warm, then turns decidedly chilly. One BBC executive who has seen the interview, which took place in a New York hotel last Wednesday, said: "He is visibly angry with Dimbleby's line of questioning and some of that anger gets directed at Dimbleby himself. As outbursts go, it is not just some flash that is over in an instant. It is something substantial and sustained.

"It is memorable television which will give the public a different insight into the President's character. It will leave them wondering whether he is as contrite as he says he is about past events. Dimbleby manages to remain calm and order is eventually restored."

Mr Clinton agreed to speak to Panorama as part of the publicity campaign for his autobiography My Life.

I don't have the time to read this thread to see if someone else posted this, nor do I have the brains to post an actual link, but below is the address of the Panorama page. It looks like old shows are archived and can be viewed online. I presume this will also be true of this show, once it runs. See:

Ivan, always enjoy your posts, and even though we've never met or talked (at least I don't think we have), I missed your contributions during your absence.

The great thing about informing someone of things like that is that we never know how many people that they, in turn, will enlighten.

Very well said, kay! Your really nailed it....I had mentioned to him before that I was "very right wing". I think it played on him and it resulted in him throwing that one down the middle of the strike zone.

I had told him how I heard all ~15 F16's take off in the wee hours for Iraq a few weeks ago (from the air base he is stationed at near my house....it was all in the local news the next day...there was even a picture of a pilot that got his goodbye kiss from his girlfriend WHILE HE SAT IN HIS COCKPIT AND SHE WAS ON A LADDER!!!). Of course I was saluting those planes out on my doorstep at 1:30 am that morning. He knew about those planes and he was interested that I was out there watching them at that hour.

Also note that there's a short story on the forthcoming interview on that page.

It looks like FR's software now puts in a hot link when you cut and paste, so apparently I now do have the brains to post a link.

And now, if he ever hears of FR through the media and they try to lead the viewers into believing that we're a bunch of kooks, he'll know better. He will have already met a FReeper ... one who is intelligent, informed, articulate, patriotic ... and who loves the sound of FREEDOM at 1:30 in the morning ... :-)

Yes, FR will do hot links if you do the cut and paste ... as long as you don't use any other html in your post, including even things like double spacing.

Thanks so much, kay....I'm so inspired.....I wrote down freerepublic.com on a napkin to hand to him after I had told him about it, and while I was writing it, he recited it, so I know I had impressed it on him. On my way home, I was so wishing I would have told him how much the MILITARY IS LOVED BY FR. I'm sure if he doesn't see it, I'll get a chance to tell him. I will be seeing him again, probably next weekend.

And oh dear, the real Bill emerged.
He only acts that way with people that he loves.
He must sure love Mr. Dimbleby a lot.

Here's an attempt at posting the original story with the pictures. I don't think the Torygraph would mind. It's not stated if the picture of Clinton with his nose at DefCon Alert is from the interview. BTW, the time of the broadcast appears to be about 1:30 in the afternoon Pacific time this Tuesday.

Why not just wait until it's on ABC, CBS, etc.? Along with the Clinton's sleeping and Kerry's thumbs up during the Reagan ceromonies.

No disrespect to you or Great Britain, Ivan, but it is sad indeed that it took a journalist in Europe to ask the kind of questions that the reporters here should have been asking for the past seven or eight years.

That aside, THANKS!

Was David Dimbleby's father Richard Dimbleby of years ago BBC?

Yes, and Richard Dimbleby's other son Jonathan is a leading political commentator on I.T.V. (the B.B.C's main television rival). Very much a family business.

"Of course I know it's "British" standard time, (BST), but it could stand for something else"

With all due respect, it does. BST = British Summer Time.

London is Six Hours ahead of Central DST1 and +1 hr Greenwich Mean Time.

As such this program will air on Tues June 22, at 4:35 pm in Chicago IL

BTW, here's a link to The World Time Server where you can get the current time anywhere in the world. You can put also an atomic clock on your pc and have it synchronize your system clock.

1: DST stands for Daylight Saving Time, also referred to as Summer Time
