IN the race among Democrats to become John Kerry's running mate, former Sen. Sam Nunn, 65, is ahead by a nose. Sources say the FBI has started combing through records of his business dealings, reviewing files and relationships. No wonder they started early — Nunn, a native of Georgia, serves on the boards of ChevronTexaco, Coca-Cola, Dell, GE, Internet Security Systems and Scientific-Atlanta, in addition to acting as co-chair and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative. A rep for the Kerry campaign said, "We're not commenting on the process."

Agree. Nunn would be an asset without a doubt. He doesn't have the name recognition among younger voters, but he is strong on defense. I hope Kerry doesn't select him. I thought something was up a week or so ago when Nunn co-authored a piece in the opinion section of the Washington Post.

But is not for big business. For many leftists, Nunn would be the nail in the coffin. Nunn positively REEKS of corporate favortism over the concerns of the left.
Nawww. Unless he has ties to Halliburton or Enron, he's safe. Kerry will just focus on associations with those two companies.
Don't bank on that...Gore couldn't win his own state and had he, he would be President right now. The number one guy on the ticket is the most important, these things are all distractions...I think another reason why Kerry wanted to delay accepting the nomination is because it will be a point in time closer to the election and may indicate if he actually has a chance to beat W...this might open up better candidates for Kerry's VP...a good friend of mine who was a Cheif of Staff for an NJ Congressman (RAT) told me that most of the better VP candidates are staying away for now because they don't want to be associated with this sinking ship.
He thinks he can basicly hold Gore's states and then steal Georgia with Nunn and Cleland, I guess. I wouldn't bet the farm on that strategy.
IMO, his best pick is Richardson. He's suffucuiently liberal so that he wouldn't offend the left wing and he brings along ethnic strength and also opens possibilities in the SW. In addition, he's currently outside of the Beltway. Although there's not a strong anti-incumbent mood this year, I think a ticket of a sitting US Senator and another Senator or Congressman is just to much of inside DC to play well across the country.
No problem. Kerry's a good ole moderate.
If Nunn took it, then we could say
Sam Nunn actually was unlike Kerry before he was like him.
1) Nunn is a hawk which would tick of the far leftist doves...of course, where else are they going to go...
2) I don't think it brings Georgia into play as Bush has a huge lead and the state is very conservative.
3) Nunn might overshadow Kerry as he is far more competent and likable.
I always thought he should get David Pryor and take Arkansas in a walk-- that's 6 EVs.
Nunn is not going to risk all for his party. He's admitted as much to say that the post-VietNam D party has essentially moved away from him.
As long as Clinton is involved in the party and has designs on it, why would Nunn, indeed, place a lifetime of credibility on the line?
Having said this, I have said for a long time - two years now, that Sam Nunn on any ticket could wipe out Bush. Nunn is more conservative than at least 12 Republican Senators I can think of.
In the end, Nunn would be so hard line on what it is he would actually go out there and back that Kerry probably couldn't use him much. Kerry would end up alienating so many froth at the mouth liberal interests that the whole equation could end up cancelling itself out for him.
Sam Nunn? Wow, that would be a bombshell in lots of respects. It would throw GA into play but the leak away to Nader from Kerry elsewhere would be horrendous.
Actually while I like Cheney, the fun thing would be if we started rumors that Nunn might take over the Republican VP spot from Cheney. :-) Now that was for chuckles.
Richardson would be my second guess for the Dem VP. While he is closely associated with the Clinton Administration, he doesn't exude the more negative qualities associated with that era.
But Richardson, I think, see the handwritting on the wall as it relates to Kerry's chances. It would hurt him with the voters in New Mexico, if for no other reason than they just hired him as Governor...and here he goes trying to get back to Washington.
Unlike Gephardt, who doesn't pretend he's going back home.
Kerry would choose him if his polling showed that liberals were desperate enough to boot out Bush that they'd support someone like Nunn in the VP slot.
And I'd say that since Kerry 100% wanted McCain, that his polling probably does show just that. Kerry might also go after another moderate senator no longer in office-- Bill Cohen (his wife is black, and that's got to be a plus in the Dem Party).
It will be Edwards.
We tried that with Lieberman in 2000-- regarding his record opposite from Gore's-- to no benefit. As I just posted, I think Kerry's polling says that liberals are willing to hold their noses just so they can laugh their asses off at a Bush-Cheney defeat-- as evidenced by his absolute and sincere interest in a Kerry-McCain ticket.
But can you see Nunn doing this for Kerry at this stage in his career?
