Newsday's Breslin: Reagan Funeral 'Cheap, Utterly Distasteful'

America's largest circulation suburban daily newspaper, Newsday, wins the prize for ugliest bit of Reagan-bashing on the day of the great man's funeral, publishing a bile-filled screed by columnist Jimmy Breslin that trashed the American icon as "a callous man" who "hated children."

"I don't see how anybody can summon grief [over Reagan's death]," Breslin observed. "His whole weeklong funeral is cheap, utterly distasteful American publicity."

The Reagan-bashing writer usually inhabits Newsday's editorial section. But in a remarkably bizarre editorial decision, Newsday decided to move up Breslin's hate-screed to page A8, in the midst of its news section, right behind a page headlined: "Paying Respects to Ronald Reagan."

Newsday's Breslin tribute to Reagan continued thusly:

"He was a callous man with a smile who cut taxes in 1981 and left [New York] city and state without funds for such things as help for dependent children. He proudly hurt the boroughs of this city more than anyone before or after him. If you live in Brooklyn, the record shows that Ronald Reagan hated children."

Acutally, Reagan's economic policies were a boon for New York - both city and state.

"Before the Gipper came along, New York, the city, was an economic disaster area," noted New York Post columnist Robert Ward on Friday." But during his tenure, "Wall Street boomed, and thus, so did city and state revenues."

New York City added 254,000 jobs and hundreds of thousands of new residents, Ward noted. Their taxes helped fund the war on crime, rebuild infrastructure and minister to thousands afflicted with AIDs.

Most of which, apparently, went unnoticed by Breslin, who proclaimed that a suitable memorial for Reagan would be to put his face on a $3 dollar bill.

Newsday's editors liked the idea so much they used it to headline his column.

To your post #26: "The words of some about others often tell more about the speaker than of whom they speak.

Speaks volumes about class (about which Breslin has none), doesn't it?

Yes, they are enraged. Just like a spoiled child, who realizes he / she was wrong...and instead of admitting it, throws another temper tantrum.

The only thing missing is the sound of a slamming bedroom door followed by "I HATE YOU!"

Its going to be much worse come Monday....but all it will do is enrage Average Americans. That is the only thing liberals can do well at this point.

"My friends: We did it. We weren`t just marking time. We made a difference. We made the city stronger. We made the city freer, and we left her in good hands. All in all, not bad, not bad at all. And so, good-bye, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America."

President Ronald Reagan was a man of the people by the people for the people.

Try as they may, they will never cast a shadow on his greatness. It is they who shall remain in his shadow for generations to come.

If the city and state of New York want to be taxed to provide services, why should they send the money to the Federal Government first? They can just tax themselves directly as much as they please and cut out the federal overhead.

On the other hand, why should the rest of the county subsidize the city and state of New York?

It makes sense to tax locally to provide revenue for local programs.

The Dims can only dream that our most gracious would lower themselves to the level of "Wellstoning" our Ronald.

God bless him and help Nancy through this difficult time.

Newsday used to be a "city" paper, but some years ago they decided to officially be a suburban paper (Long Island, really). They were not competitive in the city with the Times, Daily News, and Post. The Post consistent improves its circulation while the Times and News have been stagnant.

"Shrug. Let 'em rant, the losers. :)"

Agreed!
#1 - This is a free country. It's his right to be an idiot. I support that right, and think that everyone should recognize this man as an idiot. :)

#2 - It's so much fun to watch liberals squirm when something is really getting to them. The fact that people, the world, in fact, loved Ronald Reagan is more than the liberals can take. The liberals are about to blow a gasket, isn't it fun to watch?!

Newsday used to have a New York edition, but they couldn't make it, and it folded. Now its just a suburban newspaper, with a small readership in Queens. Jimmy Breslin, who, as it happens, also hates Cardinal Egan, can write anything he wants, and Newsday can publish it. But the readers and advertisers have rights also. They can simply stop purchasing the paper, whether by not renewing their subscriptions, or purchasing something else at news stands, or, if advertisers, advertising in competing papers.

Are you kidding? I know a paper that Newsday compares quite nicely to. Toilet paper. Used toilet paper. They are a shill for the "alternate everything is good", "no-moral-compass" democrap left. Always have been, but in the past few years they are more than obvious.

A few years ago, they had a Sunday Travel section cover story with pics entitled: Vacation Spots for Gays (or something similar).

No, it shows that New York City and New York State hated children.
Lower taxes gave them the opportunity to raise their own if necessary and step up to the plate and take care of their own.

"Ronald Reagan hated children..."

Gee, another sterling example of liberal genius at work, hmm? Their "arguments" tend to revolve around the alleged fact that conservatives hate people liberals love.

Unfortunately for brainy liberals, "I care more than you" doesn't amount to an argument. It's an assertion, an unprovable assertion that says more about the person making the claim that those its directed against.

That won't stop liberals, though. They're so intelligent and good and tolerant and wonderful that making the least bit of sense is beneath them. They would rather don the garb of the moral fanatic and ethical degenerate.

I hate it that you don't like him, Jimbo, but in politics he was everything to me, and to quite a few other people. In basic training in 1980, my squad was mostly Georgians and Minnesotans. When they came over the loudspeaker to announce we had a new president, everybody cheered. That says a lot!

I was 17 in 1979 when the economy went to hell and the Iranians took hostages. Even being a Georgian, I supported Reagan over Carter. There was never any doubt in my mind. I've been a Republican ever since. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior a few years after that, so religious reasons are not the only ones for me being a Republican. RWR had the most to do with that. I miss him. He was the greatest president of the past century. FDR, Theodore Roosevelt, and Kennedy were leadership material, but Reagan was a moral compass as well. IMHO, only Washington and Lincoln were better presidents. RIP Ronnie; you gave us a standard no one else has met. I like the Bushes, and voted/will vote for them, but do they compare to Reagan in stature? No way.....

Just let them talk. Keep on talking Ted Rall, Jimmy Breslin, and those of your ilk. I'd like to hear it all the way through November. The public is very distasteful of this.

"The more we see of the greatness of RR, the more we see a similarity with GW. GW may not be the caliber of RR, but at least he (GW) actually stands for something on principal."

Similar, but with a distinct difference. Both RR and GW have principles and stand for something, while their contempororaries stand for nothing. Both seem to be down to earth. But, GW is missing the link to the people that RR had. GW has a political "birthright", and like it or not he is from what as become somewhat of an aristocracy. I'm not attacking GW, rather, I'm pointing out that RR came from more humble roots, and that is the most striking contrast I see. Breaking it down to terms of my everyday life:
GW is like the rich guy who can hang with the average guys. He's accepted, but we all know he's a rich guy.
RR was one of us who hit it big. But, he was one of us. :)

They don't understand how 100k+ people would stay in line for 10+ hours to see his casket. Their spin is not how much these people respected President Reagan it is "How can many people be so wrong?"
