The nation should honor President Reagan by committing itself to finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease, Rep. Chris Smith said yesterday, but not by using embryos for stem cell research.
Smith, R-Washington Township, who was first elected with Reagan in 1980, yesterday blasted those who have used Reagan's death on Saturday after a decade-long bout with Alzheimer's to advocate embryonic stem cell research.

True. I've seen few people around here who really know where embryonic stem cells originate. Most seem to believe that they come from aborted fetuses, when that is not true; or that they come from some sci-fi type test tube babies or something.
Actually, they come from frozen embryos left over from fertility treatments that couples get. If the couple does not use some of the embryos, they are destroyed if the couple does not elect to preserve them.
Again, these embryos were to be destroyed, anyway. None had ever even been implanted in a woman's uterus. They would NEVER have become a baby.
Good Luck! Meanwhile, what do we do back here on Earth?
Clones! Cannibalism! Stripmining BABIES! The TOTAL destruction of Society!
Starts Tomorrow at specially selected theaters...
You're willing to allow a disease to flourish while denying various research paths based upon the biblical quotes?
You're no different from the Church of Christ, Scientist folks who withhold medical treatments the ill.
Very sad.
And that's a good thing how?
Just when the pro-life movement was making headway, The extremist come up with this nonsense to drive more people away.
And John Kerry thanks you, You just gave him issue that could put him over the top.
My wife and I both have diseases which it is thought stem cell therapy could cure. I would die before accepting the body parts of murdered children to cure me.
I read this one
Hosea
13:15
Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
13:16
Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
It doesn't sound like the Bible is preching Pro-Choice to me.
BTW, I'm Pro-life but Embryos stem cells don't come from aborted babies so I don't see why this is worth losing an election over
How, exactly, do you think such "body parts" would be obtained. Be specific. Note that I am not asking you to defend such practices; you say that you would refuse, so you would refuse. I just want to know if you are aware of how such things would be acquired in the first place.
Opposition to this sneaky form of cannibalizing embryonic individual human beings is obscene? Were you once an embryo, zarf?
Can you cite one treatment that has come from embryonic stem cells, even in animal models?
Here is a list of treatments from adult stem cells and a report on more promising discoveries for the future.
Killing humans for the benefit of other humans is obscene.
BTW, here's a report about adult stem cells that can be induced to differentiate into neural cells:

You smarmed, "...and before that we were all a sperm." You may not realize how ridiculous that assertion is as science, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. A human ORGANISM comes into existence when the gamete cells of two distinct individual other human beings unit in fecundation. Before the newly conceived individual came into being, the sperm was a sub-unit of an organ of another distinct individual. So, try again.
Please, cite one treatment that has been shown possible from embryonic stem cells. The only supposed treatment I know of is one for diabetes that took cloned mice, implanted them in a mother mouse, grew them until the *fetal* cells were developed, aborted the mice for harvest of pancreatic cells.
Great abuse of mothers as well as young of the species, as far as I'm concerned, and very expensive to try in humans. About a 100 oocytes (eggs) would be needed for one patient, costing $100,000 to $200,000, before the nuclear transfer and subsequent implantation, etc.

I can see isolated islands full of slave women, kept as virgin oocyte donors and gestators.
Not scientific. The individual's genes are present and expressed, the cell is organized and functioning and making the new human's proteins and replicating cells before gastrulation and implantation.
The human zygote is a distinct human ORGANISM. Are you trying to persuade us that that ORGANISM transmogrifies into a separate human ORGANISM at some magical even called implantation? ... And with artifical wombs, 'mother' may be a machinery complex before too long.
Clones conceived for therapeutic goals would never be allowed to be born, so I suppose they're fair game also?
