The nation should honor President Reagan by committing itself to finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease, Rep. Chris Smith said yesterday, but not by using embryos for stem cell research.
Smith, R-Washington Township, who was first elected with Reagan in 1980, yesterday blasted those who have used Reagan's death on Saturday after a decade-long bout with Alzheimer's to advocate embryonic stem cell research.

I believe Rep. Smith would have the Great Man backing him all the way.
I can't believe that Nancy came out in favor of this research. I wonder, does she share the same faith as her husband?
Look at her eyes. She would do anything to save her husband.
I don't blame her, but that doesn't make the taking of innocent life any more palatable. The President would agree, no doubt.
Bullsh*t "Dr." Smith.
Denying or slowing possible research avenues is criminal IMO.
I happen to agree with Nancy and Senator Hatch. Opposition to this research is obscene.
unfortunately, many opponents to stem cell research do not know what a stem cell is. If you do not have knowledge the basic instinct is negative. In this case it is as well complicated by emotions, promoted by ill-informed persons.
I think your wrong in what Reagan would of thought about this issue.
He was much to compassionate a man to dismiss this form of research outright. He was also notorious for ignoring pressure from the far right wing of the party when it came to making decisions like this.
Ahhhh, destroying Nancy now....you must be one of those "compassionate" conservatives.
Perhaps they first ought to research whether what they are seeking is already within their grasp.
What do you mean by these comments?
They need to start making statements about the availability of ADULT stem cells. Most in the general public are NOT aware they exist. You have to divert the attention away from the embryo research not just deny it's use. That makes you out the bad guy standing in the way of a cure, much like the same way people feel about peta standing in the way of using animals for research. You have to give a viable alternative.
even the Washington Post says stem cells wouldn't cure Alzheimer's...
"....It is a distortion that some admit is not being aggressively corrected by scientists.
"..."To start with, people need a fairy tale," said Ronald D.G. McKay, a stem cell researcher at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. "Maybe that's unfair, but they need a story line that's relatively simple to understand."...
as the blogs say, read the whole thing.
Just what Brokejaw wanted to hear.....something with which to cudgel the President.
Some people are just shameless, to use the death of a man committed to the protection of the unborn to further their agenda.
I agree with Smith. However,
>It is unfortunate, and I believe in very bad taste, that some are attempting to use the passing of President Reagan to advance the small subcategory of stem cell research that involves the killing of human embryos," Smith said.
is in extremely poor taste, since it describes the grieving widow herself. Smith's message needs to be repackaged, quickly.
If you care to be a pawn of the abortionists, so be it. Just don't think anyone is fooled.
If you are aware of any effective treatments that have been made possible with the use of fetal stem cells it is highly important that you let everybody know what they are and where they might find them.
