Thread honoring Nancy Reagan: Put your tributes here (will be hand-delivered to RWR library)
Yahoo News Photos ^ | 6/9/04

For those who were unable to watch the coverage from Point Mugu Naval Air Station this morning as President Reagan and his family left California for Washington, former First Lady Nancy Reagan did something incredibly gracious and moving. She is, after all, an 82-year-old going through an extraordinarily difficult time. Everyone would have understood if she took one of the easier methods of boarding the plane.

Yet she chose to walk up that long flight of stairs. Then, when she got to the top, she turned and waved to the crowd. The crowd spontaneously broke out in very warm applause. (That's a major general escorting Mrs. Reagan. Look at the awe on his face.)

The purpose of this thread is to give all FReepers — those of us who are Ronald Reagan's foot soldiers for life — our warmest expressions of love, support and gratitude. I am going to the RWR library on Sunday and will personally hand-deliver a printout of this thread to them. All tributes received by the library are being saved for later presentation to Mrs. Reagan.

As a child growing up the first President I could Identify with and understand was President Regan. To me he will always be my President as a young child the fears of the cold war scared me, but to see President Regan on the TV reassuring and speaking to the country it gave me great comfort. Especially during the Challenger tragedy. As and Adult now I understand and appreciate that strength and support that was provide behind the scenes by Nancy Regan.

I want to pass along my heartfelt sympathy and my deepest respect for you Nancy. You have been a rock not only for Ronald but you selfless sacrifice in his final years to support him and protect his legacy is a level to which all Americans should aspire too. God Bless you and your family, and God Bless America. Thank you Nancy Regan you are much loved.

Dearest Nancy;

I lost my mother to Alzheimer's in 1990 when hardly anyone even knew what it was. Because she lived with me, I know exactly what hell you've gone through, and how difficult it was for your beloved Ronnie. You are so brave, so strong, and you've been a faithful best friend to that marvelous man.

And now it's time for you to rest. Remember, he's free now, he's free to float and dance and most of all - to have his mind back! I honestly believe our loved ones can see us below as we struggle to make sense out of what's left of our lives. I hope you share my belief because it always gave me such a feeling of relief to be able to talk to mom (and my dad after he died). One night I got a bottle of wine, pulled a lawn chair well away from my house (which held my talkative family), and "talked" to my parents in private.

I also have a private rememberance of wonderful Ronald when he was a movie star. A good (male) friend spent several hours with your fabulous husband one night riding horses in Colorado (I believe). My friend was so impressed with this movie star who refused to participate in the drinking and partying at the lodge. He was also impressed with Mr. Reagan's love of the enviroment and his love of God and of pride in having an unblemished character. Their conversation lasted for hours.

I thought about telling the entire story here, but now that our hero is gone, I'd much rather hold it close to my heart, as if telling it to everyone would somehow diminish the memory.

May God richly bless you, dear lady. And know there are thousands - no - probably millions of us out here who share a part of your grief. You must be so proud that he chose you to love. So proud....

Now it's time for you to rest. Please do that for us?

Mrs. Reagan

Thank you for your example of a great love for your husband. Such a beautiful example of love for our young and our old.

I am so very thankful that God gave us Ronald Reagan and you for all these years and I appreciate so much his leadership of this great country.

We have all witnessed a great man, his beautiful faith in God, in America and us and the power of his courage.

May God bless and comfort you and your family. He will live in your heart with you daily now and in each of our hearts also.

Dear Mrs. Reagan,

This past week is truly a testament to your strength and a testament to the world of just how much you and Ronnie still mean to so many after all of these years. With every American of every political stripe, of every color, coming out to pay their respect to a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

You and Ronnie are truly an inspiration to many of us as well. May God Bless you Mrs. Reagan, and may God Bless your children and your grandchildren in this time of grief. I truly believe it when your beloved husband and one of my hero's said "There are brighter days ahead", there sure is. Thank you Mrs. Reagan, you and Ronnie are a shining example of all that is good in America.

Mrs.Reagan, as a child of 11, I didn't understand the significance of the handshake from a man running for the Governor of California.Only as I became an adult did I realize just what an honor I had bestowed on me.

Mrs.Reagan, I mourn the loss of your beloved husband with the rest of our country. He was a great man and I want to thank you for sharing him with us. Without your selflessness, this country would have missed out on the best President America has ever had.The sense of honor and decency your husband brought to the Presidency was such a welcomed blessing at a time when this nation needed it the most.We were shown that to be an American was one of the greatest gifts we could have.

Mrs Reagan, as you walk through this last journey with you husband, please know that you are not alone. That child of long ago remembers who was standing beside the man all those years and if I could be there to thank you in person ,I would. My love and prayers go with you during this sad time and may you find comfort in the love from a grateful nation.

Dear President Reagan,
you changed my life!

You taught us what it meant to be a true American president. You lifted up our spirits when we were so low that we were embarrassed to celebrate our country's birthday, when our brave soldiers were booed at parades, when American citizens were told we were at fault for consuming too much and creating a "malaise."

But in each of us remained a little spark of memory in our hearts. A sweet memory of being free and adventuresome American pioneers - and you ignited the flame.

Yes, you carried this entire country forward financially, and militarily, but most important of all, you freed our spirits. Thank you sir, for having the strength to believe in us and keep on course, even when enemies seemed to be all around you. I will never forget what you did for my beloved, God-blessed America!

Mrs. Reagan, my respect for you has grown so much. You and your "Ronnie" were so good for each other. God bless you for all the care and love you gave him, until the very end. You are in our prayers as well. You were a wonderful First Lady.

Dear Mrs. Reagan,

Thanks to you and President Reagan for your service to our country.

A special thank you for your successful efforts in preserving the memory of "Our President" as we knew him during his term in office. Your dedication to each other and to our country is appreciated and admired by millions.

Your generous sharing of this time of farewell affords the opportunity for younger generations to determine for themselves, rather than through media spin, what the Reagan Presidency and the 1980's really meant to our country and the world.

God bless you and your family. May He provide you with the strength in the coming years that you have exhibited during your beloved husband's illness.

I just heard a man named Bob Just on TV and I think he put it well.... "Reagan was like our father, a good parent, who always told us YOU CAN DO IT! Democrats are like a bad parent always telling us we can't do anything for ourselves." I see Ronald Reagan as a great father figure, a great leader, who told us we could do great things. He brought out the best in people. Thank you God for sending Ronald Reagan to US!!! Amen
