Market seems to be expecting payroll growth of 200-300k and an unemployment rate of 5.6%.
Just received our local Chamber of Commerce's monthly newsletter - they highlight a few statistics comparing figures from 1993 to 2003. Our sales tax collections have increased by 54% during the decade. Most telling are our unemployment figures - 1993 (the year of the rat) was 7.6% while 2003, unemployment dropped to 4.4%. We are at 4.3% today. Not bad at all.
Will someone please tell Connecticut that this is going on??

"More good news for the media to ignore"
I just laugh when people tell me the media isn't biased. This week with the Iraqis beginning their own government, and the fantastic economic news, the lead story page of our hometown newspaper was about Bush "scouring old campaigns for pointers". Today it is "Troops having extended stays".
I'm still waiting for someone other than Fox to cover one of the major scandals of this century, the Oil for Food UN scandal.
I'm not holding my breath, but their lack of coverage is why I don't buy it (newspapers) and don't watch it (alphabet networks).
While the media won't be reporting this, as you suggest, the very bright side is come October the Democrats won't be able to mention the Economy as a reason to dismiss the President.
Have you noticed you haven't heard a thing about the Deficit for about two months now?
Thats because its being paid down very very quickly, far quicker than even the most optimistic believed possible.

Do you seriously contend that you, who have been living in America for years and can speak English, can not find a way to relocate to a place you can find employment? Can you not discover some way to create a job for yourself?
All through the history of this country, all sorts of people have started from BROKE and become modestly wealthy.

While I am not in the same situation as RaceBannon, I was there two years ago. I did end up moving and I did end up using credit cards to finance the move. Two years later, I am still paying on them and other debt I racked up while unemployed.

Yes you are right. But I am sure most of those didn't have to sell their old house, buy a new one, pay moving costs, & deposits. Bootstraps are wonderful things to pull yourself up by, but sometimes you need a little more. Luckily for myself, I had a job set up at my destination to begin.
Try to not be so judgemental.

RaceBannon - I'm trying to get a handle on why you think it is so expensive to relocate. If you have been unemployed for 3+ years, certainly you can't have that many possessions that need to be moved. I assume you live in an apartment. Do you have children (that would be coming with you)? Is there some reason why you couldn't rent a U-haul for 100 bucks instead of hiring one of those shyster moving companies ? Yes, you'll need a couple months' deposit for an apartment. You'll find that in the places that have high job growth, the cost of living is so much lower that 2 months rent = 1 month's rent in Conn, so it won't cost you any extra (especially if you move to a ratty hellhole temporarily till you get a job). Something tells me that a move isn't impossible, it's just impossible under the parameters you've set.
Remember how the partisan press trupeted the loss of jobs over and over and over and over and over.
Now that jobless claims are falling we have the sounds of silence.
