Crawford mayor is Kerry supporter
BY GROMER JEFFERS JR.
The Dallas Morning News
(KRT) - Crawford may be the heart of Bush country, but the town's mayor says John Kerry is the best choice for president.
"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday. "I don't see where the city is any better off."
The Kerry campaign recently listed Campbell as one of 100 black mayors around the country - seven of them Texans - who support the Massachusetts senator over President Bush. But the campaign has not focused particular attention on the endorsement.
With his sprawling ranch near Crawford, Bush is the area's most famous resident. Tourists flood the Central Texas city's tiny downtown on weekends to purchase Bush memorabilia and eat the Presidential cheeseburger basket at the Coffee Station, the restaurant that Bush occasionally visits while on vacation.
Campbell, a Democrat who has been mayor since 1999, said he's met Bush once but doesn't feel inclined to support the former Texas governor. He voted for Al Gore in 2000.
"I would say the city has a mix of Bush and Kerry supporters," he said. "The Kerry supporters feel like Bush has not delivered on his promises."
Some Texas Republicans took the endorsement in stride.
"You will find a few Kerry supporters in Texas," said Victor Carrillo, chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission. "But the majority of Texans support President Bush."
Campbell says he's not worried about a backlash among his constituents.
"I have the right to vote for who I want to be president," he said. "If some people around here don't like it, they can vote for someone else for mayor."

Neither is math.
Well, maybe if they got rid of The Mayor...........

Maybe we are looking at this all wrong. 4 years ago, George W. Bush was Governor of Texas. Maybe he thinks he would be better off if George W. Bush were still governor over his small town.
What a strange, sad little man.
Sadly, there's the exact voting mindset of far too many in this country. Forget the bigger picture. Family. God. Society. Security. Safety. No, just figure out how each election choice might personally impact you.
Shaking head.
MM
Who knew that he could sing Dixie Chick tunes? "I'd ashamed he's from Texas..."
I guarantee you that the spoiled brat media will prominently feature this mayor over the summer as the perspire and conspire to get back at Bush for his vacationing there.
Perhaps it would be good for some freepers to do a protest one weekend in Crawford out in front of the gift shops, with a sign stating, "Boycott Crawford, the Mayor endorsed Kerry". That might stir up some vocal opposition to the mayor, and let him know that words have meaning and consequences. The town shouldn't be benefitting from Bush while silently allowing their mayor to try and undermin his reelection. If they want the dollars, they need to speak up and speak out.
"This is the rule of thumb for determining which candidate should be POTUS! It's all about "me, me, me." Democrats-- pathetic."
Careful, there... that question won Reagan the election in '80.
Crawford Texas is a pretty small town, and small town mayors have little power and influence beyond their own small domain.
Democrats have been voted in in a bunch of small towns across Texas, mainly by immigrants who vote for the one promising the most hand-outs. He better shut his yap, or he'll find his little-powerless self voted out.
That's like the mayor of Anaheim saying the city is no better off since they built Disneyland.
Well, I guess he's in the minority then. According to a Harris Poll released yesterday, Americans feel their personal situation has improved over the past 5 years, by a 56-16 margin.
I agree. You're four years older and a lot more stupid.
I have seen Crawford. It is a little podunk town that has benefited greatly from tourism. That mayor does not know Shi'ite from Shinola.
I was watching Surviving Nugent last night and apparently Ted's ranch is near Pres. Bush's. Maybe Ted can help get this fella get his wish (apparently) and get himself voted OUT.
What a selfish a-hole! It's all about him...forget 911 and th War on Terror and rebuilding our economy. I guess the post office lost mayor Diptwad's tax rebate.
>"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years >ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday
I knew that the President's job was tough, but I had no idea it was his job to personally make sure every one of us American's life better!!
Wow, I have much more respect for Bush now than ever before!
See my #44. I don't know why I take exception to his comment, though, because I see that he's campaigning for Kerry.
Hey, you almost convinced me! Are you a part of the Associated Press? ...wait, you're twisting words to promote Bush, not bash him... must be part of that "Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy" I keep hearing the kin-folk talking about.
I hope the guy who runs against Crawfords mayor uses the line "Not only do I not see where the city is better off since electing this man, but even he doesn't see where he or the city is better off."
