Crawford mayor is Kerry supporter

BY GROMER JEFFERS JR.

The Dallas Morning News

(KRT) - Crawford may be the heart of Bush country, but the town's mayor says John Kerry is the best choice for president.

"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday. "I don't see where the city is any better off."

The Kerry campaign recently listed Campbell as one of 100 black mayors around the country - seven of them Texans - who support the Massachusetts senator over President Bush. But the campaign has not focused particular attention on the endorsement.

With his sprawling ranch near Crawford, Bush is the area's most famous resident. Tourists flood the Central Texas city's tiny downtown on weekends to purchase Bush memorabilia and eat the Presidential cheeseburger basket at the Coffee Station, the restaurant that Bush occasionally visits while on vacation.

Campbell, a Democrat who has been mayor since 1999, said he's met Bush once but doesn't feel inclined to support the former Texas governor. He voted for Al Gore in 2000.

"I would say the city has a mix of Bush and Kerry supporters," he said. "The Kerry supporters feel like Bush has not delivered on his promises."

Some Texas Republicans took the endorsement in stride.

"You will find a few Kerry supporters in Texas," said Victor Carrillo, chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission. "But the majority of Texans support President Bush."

Campbell says he's not worried about a backlash among his constituents.

"I have the right to vote for who I want to be president," he said. "If some people around here don't like it, they can vote for someone else for mayor."

"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago...."

This mayor apparently was expecting some kind of graft...if thats what he's wanting maybe Kerry IS his man.

Some folks in Crawford seem to think differently.

Since President Bush’s move to Crawford, renewed interest has spurred downtown growth once again.

Well, but didn't R. Reagan borrow that line successfully from GA Jimmy in 1980?
I think it's sickening to see a voter adopt political rhetoric as a voting philosophy.

Its the same game with the liberals- all about *ME*. If the mayor had any sense at all, he'd realize that his *constituents* are better off today because of the Western Whitehouse and extra tourism dollars.

Typical liberal BS. The liberal blames the government for why their life stinks.

Guess it's all in how the mayor defines better off. Wish the journo had thought to ask for the mayor's definition.

Put this: ""I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday. "I don't see where the city is any better off."

Together with this: "With his sprawling ranch near Crawford, Bush is the area's most famous resident. Tourists flood the Central Texas city's tiny downtown on weekends to purchase Bush memorabilia and eat the Presidential cheeseburger basket at the Coffee Station, the restaurant that Bush occasionally visits while on vacation."

And you logically conclude with this: "If some people around here don't like it, they can vote for someone else for mayor." Good advice for the citizens of Crawford.

Crawford needs a mayor that can actually see the forest for the trees.

What a dumbsh**. Like all the mementos and crap they are peddling that says "HOME OF GEORGE W BUSH" doesn't help the town economy.

Little bit of a disconnect there, eh?

"I have the right to vote for who I want to be president," he said. "If some people around here don't like it, they can vote for someone else for mayor."

I expect they will. ---

What a stupid statement for a MAYOR to make! He was supposed to "make a difference, etc." If his statement is true, then they need a NEW MAYOR!..............

Especially considering the fact that the President brought an entire new industry into Crawford -- Tourism! If the mayor can't make improvements to the town despite that, then shame on him.

"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago,"

That was the old mantra. Regardless of who is president not everyone will be better off. Some tend to hold themselves back because they expect others to make their lives more simple. Perhaps the good mayor is one of these. As for better off, it was Bill Gates and the "dot-com" boom of the 90's that made people better off, not Bill Clinton, yet I'll be the mayor didn't vote for Gates for president.

Another case of ....open mouth insert foot.

People run for office for 2 reasons:

1. Make a difference
2. Get power

Which one did he just admit too?

The Kerry campaign recently listed Campbell as one of 100 black mayors

Given that the gentleman is black, there was a 95% chance that he was a dim, thus there should be little interest in the fact that he is following the party line.

In Texas, mayors are all elected on nonpartisan ballots in off years. If a mayor is a "Democrat," such is his statement of allegiance, but not a ballot phenomenon. There are more Democrats in TX than many of us seem to think, and they expect to return to the majority in 2006.

A Democratic politican supports John Kerry. Talk about a non-story!

He's a lying liar:

"I don't see where the city is any better off."

Tourism is up. Sales are up. Sales tax revenue is up as is hotel use. More income for the community.

If the town is not better off for the increased traffic then the mayor must be doing something wrong.
