Crawford mayor is Kerry supporter
BY GROMER JEFFERS JR.
The Dallas Morning News
(KRT) - Crawford may be the heart of Bush country, but the town's mayor says John Kerry is the best choice for president.
"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday. "I don't see where the city is any better off."
The Kerry campaign recently listed Campbell as one of 100 black mayors around the country - seven of them Texans - who support the Massachusetts senator over President Bush. But the campaign has not focused particular attention on the endorsement.
With his sprawling ranch near Crawford, Bush is the area's most famous resident. Tourists flood the Central Texas city's tiny downtown on weekends to purchase Bush memorabilia and eat the Presidential cheeseburger basket at the Coffee Station, the restaurant that Bush occasionally visits while on vacation.
Campbell, a Democrat who has been mayor since 1999, said he's met Bush once but doesn't feel inclined to support the former Texas governor. He voted for Al Gore in 2000.
"I would say the city has a mix of Bush and Kerry supporters," he said. "The Kerry supporters feel like Bush has not delivered on his promises."
Some Texas Republicans took the endorsement in stride.
"You will find a few Kerry supporters in Texas," said Victor Carrillo, chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission. "But the majority of Texans support President Bush."
Campbell says he's not worried about a backlash among his constituents.
"I have the right to vote for who I want to be president," he said. "If some people around here don't like it, they can vote for someone else for mayor."

Spoken as one of the favored straw bosses on the RAT Plantation!
"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday. "I don't see where the city is any better off."
Spoken by an individual whose party mascot is an ass.
Yes, unfortunately I'm represented by Chet. The mayor of Crawford needs to open his eyes. Since the President bought his ranch, Crawford has become the "in" place for Waco suburbians who want McMansions on small acreage, and the city's tax base has increased considerably. The Crawford ISD is good and a big draw for young families. There's opportunity there if he's willing to work for it.
Pathetic Dim mentality.
My existence & quality of life is dependent on who is president this is the pathetic mind set that they have used to brain washed this country.
Frankly, if Im better off next year, 5 years, or 10 years from now it wont be because of the Dims or Republicans in office, who is or isnt president, or who controls Congress. I CONTROL MY STATION IN LIFE. By the grace of God.
. Thats not too say they have no influence . But frankly, my quality of life was the same from Carter to Reagan to Bush to Clinton to Bush
Pathetic
So let it be written, so let it be done.
"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday. "I don't see where the city is any better off."
Yet: "Tourists flood the Central Texas city's tiny downtown on weekends to purchase Bush memorabilia and eat the Presidential cheeseburger basket at the Coffee Station, the restaurant that Bush occasionally visits while on vacation."
"Campbell, a Democrat who has been mayor since 1999,"
The demonrats continue to prove they are a group of liars!
"I have the right to vote for who I want to be president," he said. "If some people around here don't like it, they can vote for someone else for mayor."
True, but an endorsement is an official act. The town better figure out what official stance they want their Mayor to take and act accordingly. If Kerry is elected their tourism dollars go down the tubes!
And this is supposed to inspire confidence in his own leadership abilities? Sounds like the good mayor is trying to deflect criticsm of his own inept administration to that of the national govt, which makes for a convenient target!
Notice the Dem's ability to indentify themselves as victims, "I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago"; I'm sure this guy is living on peanut butter sandwiches and macaroni and cheese (or is that cheese and macaroni?).
Bingo.
He's black, He's a Democrat, who did you ecpect him to vote for?
No news here just another black guy doing the Dem two-step, Ask hiom what Bill Clinton did for the black race. Yeah Bill did the same thing for the black race he did to Monica. He stuck it to them.
And hopefully only vote "once". LOL!
...a Democratic politician voting for a Democratic politician is news?
The mayor of Crawford needs to open his eyes.
You're right about Texas mayors. A lot of them are very liberal, especially in the larger cities. I think the Waco area is mistakenly perceived to be ultra conservative. The demographics in this area show our county doesn't have a large, upwardly mobile middle class. We have mostly the "haves and have nots". The fact of the matter is that much of the Baylor University administration and staff hold very liberal views, our newspaper generally comes down on the left side of all issues, and in local and state elections here the left prevails quite often. Chet Edwards is a case in point.
What a stupid statement for a MAYOR to make! He was supposed to "make a difference, etc." If his statement is true, then they need a NEW MAYOR!.............."
What a brilliant observation!!!
It pisses off the press that they've had to go to the hinterlands of Texas (actually about 20 miles out of Waco) every year during the heat of the summer.
Some people actually criticize the location of Crawford in their bashing of the President -- not realizing how stupid they sound. After all, all other presidents have had "western" or "southern" or other "vacation White House" type retreats for themselves.
Now you can add the mayor the sleepy little town to the list of those who don't like President Bush.
Robert Campbell was recently named by the John Kerry campaign as one of 100 black mayors across the nation that will be supporting his candidacy for the nation's highest office.
"I don't see where I'm better off than I was four years ago," Robert Campbell said Tuesday. "I don't see where the city is any better off."Let's see. Thousands of dollars pumped into the local economy by plenty of people -- he can start with that. Hmmmmm?
Some people simply don't think before they open their mouths to spew their hatred. They can't -- otherwise they'd realize how stupid they sound.
"I have the right to vote for who I want to be president," he said. "If some people around here don't like it, they can vote for someone else for mayor."Campbell better be careful of what he wishes for -- he just might get it.
