After weeks of repetitive wall-to-wall coverage of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, the American media have finally achieved success: U.S. soldiers are now being labeled as war criminals by some of their fellow Americans - just as their predecessors in Vietnam were.
"I've been called a baby killer," ROTC recruit Alexia Regner told the New York Post on Friday, saying the insult was hurled by some of her fellow students at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University.
"I was pissed. I would never kill a baby," Regner explained. "I was thinking, I took an oath to defend their right to call me that."
Her friend Kristin Sinosky - another ROTC recruit - says even some of her professors have joined in the troop-bashing. One told her, "You must be too busy marching to get your work done."
Undoubtedly, the vast majority of Americans still think military volunteers like Regner and Sinosky represent the best that America has to give. But there's also no question that for some, the obsessive coverage of Abu Ghraib by the likes of the New York Times and the Washington Post have tainted the entire U.S. military's image.
Almost since the outset of the war on terrorism, reporters couldn't wait to draw comparisons to Vietnam. When the Abu Ghraib story broke, the coverage was rife with comparisons to the My Lai massacre - the atrocity used by war critics to justify the "baby killer" slur 30 years ago.
It's "Mission Accomplished" for America's journalist class. They've managed to make Abu Ghraib and My Lai synonymous in the minds of enough Americans that now some of today's soldiers fighting the war on terror are being slandered the same way.
Liberals really should be careful using the term "baby killer" it too obviously points out their hypocricy.
I hadn't thought about it that way. VERY good point!
The problem is they get away with it! They don't even think the word hypocrisy could even be applied to them. The world is upside down and I am ready to explode!
EggsAckley!! Gee, I wonder where they stand on abortion??
EXCELLENT point.
And the man who is more responsible than anyone else for the first time "baby killer" was applied to our troops is now running for President.
"Bring on those silly people who call anyone a baby killer to any military post and we will show then the support they really deserve."
LOL! Hard to hear their screams waaaay down in the motor pool!
Maybe our troops should dress up like doctors carrying coathangers...
"And the man who is more responsible than anyone else for the first time "baby killer" was applied to our troops is now running for President."
Oh! But we CAN'T bring up that point! Why...if we did that...well we'd be questioning his partiotism...and heaven forbid we question the patriotism of someone who got out of Vietnam as fast as he could so he could get home and work with the 5th column of people trying to undermine our efforts over there and our givernment at home. Nah can't do that at ALL! /sarcasm
"They are the liars and the believers of liars. They do so at their own risk, and I wish we could just quit excusing their attacks on decent humanity."
I agree with you.
But it won't happen until:
...The NY Times ends it's 6 week streak of running Abu Ghraib on the front page. (Nothing new has come out after the first week of coverage).
...the story of an American being murdered garners more than 36 hours worth of coverage.
...the story of a professional athlete who gave it all up to serve his country and dies doing that...get's more coverage than the negative articles written about him...
...the THOUSANDS of good news stories supplant the stupid actions of SIX of the 136,000 soldiers in Iraq in the nightly news and the morning papers front pages.
Until the majority of people in this country finally do something that sends a clear signal to the liberal east coast media elite that we are tired of their blatant attempt to manipulate our opinion by creating news where there isn't any and they stop their naked ambition to assist the RATS in defeating ANY and ALL Republicans...the image of myself and others who wear the uniform as "baby killers" will persist.
This image is being pushed by the same low-life leftists who tried to destroy this country in the 60s and 70s. But is a harder sell this time because America is wiser and more sophisticated now. This time their anti-American propaganda will only take hold if we allow those statements to go unchallenged. We have a duty to our troops to speak up, to dispute the lies that put their lives in danger.
Babies like this?
I blame Kerry for this crap!!!
He started it in the 1970's and now he is saying our soldiers are fighting an unjust war again.
Why can't people see that when Kerry is in the headlines nothing good can come from it!!
Why can't people see this connection?
'Nuff Said!
