Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has helped lead our military to brilliant and overwhelming victories in Afghanistan and Iraq.  These victories liberated over 40 million people and removed two of the most oppressive regimes on the planet. All this was accomplished with far fewer American dead then on the first day of the Normandy invasion. 1  The liberation of Iraq was accomplished  with fewer civilian dead than occurred in Normandy, a single French province,  in World War II.2  Although difficulties remain in both countries, the chances of Saddam or the Taliban returning to power are nil, provided America stands firm.  No wonder Rumsfeld is hated by those Americans who believe that America is the major evil in the world.  As a demonstration of that hatred, numerous leftists of DC Anti-War Network (DAWN) planned to demonstrate at Rumsfeld's personal residence on Friday, May 21, 2004. For the second time in just over a week, FReepers of DC Chapter went to Rumsfeld's house to peacefully express support for Rumsfeld and to express opposition to the America-hating leftists. (Earlier FReep described here.) The honor roll of FReepers at this gathering of eagles: tgslTakoma, RabidRalph, Staytrue, L_von_Mises, BufordP, Leadpenny,  Jimmy Valentine's brother, Kristinn, and BillF.  We were also pleased that Protest Warrior Israeliboy joined us.

DC Chapter FReepers gathered on the sidewalk in front of Rummy's, well in advance of the leftists.  We checked in with the military who provide security for Rummy's house and with a uniform Secret Service officer who came along. As we waited, a tourist walking along with his adult niece enjoyed our signs and our presence when we explained that we were there to support Rumsfeld against the leftists who would be coming there.  This guy shook our hands and returned from his hotel with a camera wanting to get photos of us and him standing with several of us. As we waited Leadpenny volunteered to go back to Dupont Circle and recon the leftists.  When BufordP noted that it was quite far, Army veteran Leadpenny jokingly told Air Force veteran BufordP, "I was Army, not Air Force.  I can march."  At least one of Rumsfeld's security guys broke out laughing, leading me to conclude that he was Army CID. The Rumsfeld military security, Uniform Secret Service officers, and DC Police were professional and courteous, but there was some confusion, probably due to the multitude of agencies involved.  Initially, military security had us remove a sign that had been laid on the wall at the front of Rumsfeld's property.  We told the military security and the first Secret Service officer that we would go across the street if that was their direction.  Eventually, they asked us to do that and we went across the street, on the sidewalk right in front of low wall and high fence of the French Embassy. Then, a DC Police officer arrived on motorcycle just ahead of the leftists. He questioned the Secret Service officer as to why the FReepers were across the street from Rummy's.  The motorcycle officer thought that the pro-Rummy group (i.e., FReepers) would be on Rummy's side of the street, whereas the anti-Rummy (i.e., leftists) would be across the street.  The Secret Service officer advised that a Lieutenant had wanted FReepers across the street so that leftists would not be tempted to join us on the Rummy side of the street.  At any rate, the leftists would end up next to us with some close quarters verbal combat, but nothing beyond verbal combat. A couple leftists skipped the march and showed up ahead of the their marching comrades. The marchers were soon heard and seen approaching our location. Police cars blocking side street funneled the leftists to our side of the street.

As the about 30 leftists approached, they were chanting something.  As they got within earshot, BufordP shouted HEY HEY HO HO, HEEEY SOMETHING RHYTHMS WITH HO.  After other FReepers joined in, the chant became "WHAT DO WE WANT? Right click and save if you want to listen later.] The leftists were soon camped out right next to us.  Walking with them was a guy with an American flag and a sign that said "What prison abuse?"  At first we thought he was some sort of leftist infiltrator when he joined us, but in addition to his full size U.S. flag (right side up), he had a small Israeli flag pin on his backpack.  Since the Israeli flag was not defaced (leftists usually put a swastika on it), I realized that he was truly on our side as he claimed. This was Protest Warrior Israeliboy.

There was a close quarters battle of chants between the FReepers and the leftists.  Among leftist chants were TORTURE IS THE NAZI WAY, RUMSFELD OUT THE DOOR TODAY.and NO BLOOD FOR OIL. Protest Warrior Israeliboy joined us, but we were initially suspicious because he seemed to arrive with the leftists.  However, we were glad to have him after realizing that he was on our side.

I had an exchange with Luke, a leftist who bikes to protests all the time.  I told him to "Swim to Cuba, Bike to Cuba."  He said that he wanted to ride a tank in Cuba in order to attack Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. base there.  I said that he was treasonous.  [CLICK TO HEAR THE SOUND FILE (WAV FORMAT,  29 SECONDS, 616 Kb).] Jimmy Valentine's brother (JVB) interrupted their THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE chants by shouting WHAT SOCIALISM LOOKS LIKE.  At that point, this little black-hat wearing leftist woman walked towards JVB shouting WHAT'S WRONG WITH SOCIALISM?  JVB laughs and moves back to prevent her from crashing into him. Her intent was probably to bump into JVB, then feign injury at the hands of a big man.  I shouted at her GET BACK WITH YOUR COMRADES. FReepers chanted FOUR MORE YEARS.  [CLICK TO HEAR THE SOUND FILE (WAV FORMAT,  7 SECONDS, 150 Kb).] When leftists chanted HEY RUMSFELD, HOW MANY KIDS HAVE YOU KILLED TODAY, I pointed out to Jimmy Valentine's brother that they were using a chant from the 60s.  Under my suggestion, JVB started his chant: YOU TOOK THE BROWN ACID, IT WAS NOT PARTICULARLY VERY GOOD (per the Woodstock announcement). When the leftists started chanting obscenities, BufordP said WATCH THAT POTTY MOUTH.  Leftist Luke said, YOU GONNA DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?  YOU TALK THE TALK, DO YOU WALK THE WALK? The "peace" protestor, who fantasizes about riding in a tank attacking the  U.S. base at Guantanamo, was challenging BufordP to fight.  BufordP was about 10 feet away from the bicycle-holding leftist and laughed it off and started growling like a dog. With only a dozen or so leftists still on site, they started singing WE ALL LIVE IN A MILITARY STATE, A MILITARY STATE, A MILITARY STATE to a tune roughly like the Beatles "Yellow Submarine." Several of them danced in a circle as they sang of the "military state" that they lived in. I wonder what would have happened to the leftists if they had demonstrated outside the Iraqi Defense Minister's personal residence 14 plus months ago? Now, Saddam really had a military state, but the U.S. leftists only have a delusional state.

After the leftists returned to the hidey holes from which they came, many FReepers celebrated with food and drink at an undisclosed location.

1. Over 2000 Americans died in one day during the June 6, 1944 invasion of Nazi-occupied France at Normandy.  Less than 800 Americans have died in Iraq after more than a year of fighting across a California-sized country.  Each death is tragic, but the number of deaths have been incredibly low using historical standards and considering what has been accomplished.

2. A Deputy Defense Secretary under Clinton claimed that "thirty thousand French civilians died during the Normandy invasion,"  whereas Encyclopedia Britannica estimates 12,200 French civilians died in Normandy.  Regardless of which number is closer to the correct number, compare that to the dubious over-estimate of an anti-war web site: a maximum of  11,010 Iraqi civilian dead as of May 26, 2004..  In other words, fewer Iraqi civilians died in the whole California-sized country in over a year of fighting than occurred in Normandy, a single French province,  in several months of fighting.

We can't claim to have protected Rumsfeld. Military security (probably Army CID), US Secret Service, and DC Police did the real protecting. And God bless them for doing that. We just protested the protestors.

Seems like, from the DAWN website, that the leftists' goal was to have "...drowned the Rumsfeld residence in noise."

Real noble goal there folks. I don't know why they even try to delude themselves or others. They aren't about peace, or anything closely resembling a peaceful society. It's all about anarchy.

This shouldn't deter you DC Freepers though. Better to "drown" them out, then allow them to seduce others with their "feel good" (read, "irrational") philosophy.
