- For those of you who need a little 'ammo' to convince your libearl friends who are still in a 'get Bush' coma as to the connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq here are some reports from various sources you might want to consider. There are many more. You won't read about them in most newspapers, and the last place in the world you'll find such info is in any of the television news forums.

Here are a couple of reports that don't pertain so much to the Saddam / Al Qaeda connection per se but emphasize more the likley possibility that they had every reason to form alliances with him, given all the WMD Saddam never accounted for.

Reference bump.
Colombian drug lords do not have a common interest with Basque separists in Spain other than the latest terrorist techniques. They all share the common interest of more efficient and deadly results. The drug trade is the financier of a lot of these groups. Getting fixated on one particular group and ignoring the rest is not too wise. They are all terrorists.
What you say is very correct. The IRA for example was funded largely by Americans but armed by Gaddafi and the PLO - the armalites from US gun stores notwithstanding.
I don't accept that Bin Laden and Hussein worked in concert. There may have been limited contact based a limited joint aim (to hurt the US) but Al-Qaeda is as opposed to secular Arabs as it the West. Just as Irish Catholics were happy to accept weapons from a Muslim dictator when they both had a desire to harm the UK, so Saddam and Qaeda may have had limited contact.
But organised, working-hand-in-hand partnership? Not likely.
Many of these links are probably duplicates, but let me add my list to this one as well:
We know Saddam worked with the PLO and other terrorists, he funded them. He at LEAST knew that 9/11 was coming.
Less than two months before 9/11/01, the state-controlled Iraqi newspaper Al-Nasiriya carried a column headlined, American, an Obsession called Osama Bin Ladin. (July 21, 2001)
In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.
The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden will strike America on the arm that is already hurting, and that the US will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, New York, New York.

Your response shows you haven't read very many of the articles linked. As well, to believe there was no connection is to believe OBL merely was gossiping with ole Saddam when he warned Saddam that 9/11 was coming and Saddam published the information in his state-run newspaper.
bump
Saddam wasn't the only one who had a vague idea something was up. The US, German and French intelligence services all knew something was up too. I'm not saying that Saddam was good guy - far, far from it - he needed to be removed, but I don't buy the idea of a link between him and Osama.
Then you obviously do not know just how many Al Qaeda terrorists lived in Iraq, trained in WMD in Iraq, WTC bombers took refuge there, Saddam didn't just know "something was up", he knew what was coming and where.
Saddam had an ambassador to AQ. His sons ordered intelligence officials to meet with AQ to plan terrorist activities. The wealth of information is there. Read a little, unless you already have a mindset that doesn't permit that.
Ramzi Yousef (1993 WTC) and Terry Nichols (OKC) crossed paths in the Phillipines. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (9/11) was Yousef's uncle. It is interesting to note that Yousef entered the United States on an Iraqi passport and had been known among the New York fundamentalists as "Rashid, the Iraqi". Another name that could be thrown into the mix is Abdul Rahman Yasin, a U.S. citizen who moved to Iraq in the 1960's and returned to the U.S. in 1992. After the 1993 WTC bombing, Yasin fled to Iraq and was given a monthly salary and housing by Saddam Hussein's regime.
Why did this get moved to chat?
The connection was actually established well enough in a federal court of law to get a judgement of $104 million awarded to the plaintiffs, with Iraq being one of the defendants.
The logical path for these two would be: Saddam would supply the WMD, Usama would supply the where, when and how...Terrorist textbook stuff!! It's why I still think the Anthrax attack will lead back to Iraq.
I have no doubts that Ramzi Yousef had Iraqi links and that Saddam was involved in the FIRST World Trade Center attack.
However after that there is only circumstantial evidence linking Iraq to any Al-Qaeda activity in relation to 9/11.
Saddam was a crafty bugger who outlasted two Presidents. He knew that by the time President Bush II was elected, his time for farnarkling about had well and truly passed.
The lead hijacker being witnessed meeting with Iraqi intelligence in Prague a few months before 9/11 may not be definitive, but I'd call it a lot more than just "circumstantial".
