Ehrlich rejects calls for apology over remarks (MD's Gov. calls multiculturalism "crap" and "bunk")

ANNAPOLIS -- Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. rejected calls to apologize for his remarks last week describing multiculturalism as "crap" and "bunk."

Ehrlich defended his comments on talk radio as "common sense" and declined to apologize Tuesday.

"We celebrate our ethnicities quite appropriately," he said, noting that he was once named "German of the Year" for Maryland. But he said multiculturalism, which he defined as separating people into different groups, was wrong.

"In America we have a singular culture, common values and a common language," he said. "It's a common history, it's a common culture. ... We should not separate ourselves. This is a melting pot society. ... I think we need to get back to our roots, which is to celebrate the melting pot."

On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council unanimously passed a resolution expressing "deep concern" over the governor's "ill-chosen remarks."

"The County Council suggests to Governor Ehrlich the phrase 'I'm sorry' as appropriate to the occasion," according to the resolution.

However, the council did not seek a similar apology from Comptroller William Donald Schaefer (D), who sparked the brouhaha at last week's Board of Public Works meeting.

This guy sounds like presidential timber. They wanted their own state assault weapons ban, and he said he would veto it.

When Republican'ts say something controversial, they make it worse by apologizing for it. When Democrats say something stupid, instead of apologizing for it, they follow it up by saying something stupider with even more conviction.

The point is: DO NOT MAKE APOLOGIES FOR SOMETHING YOU BELIEVE IN!!!

What part of E Pluribus Unum don't these "multiculturalists" understand.

Wasn't it John Wayne that made the point of never apologizing?

I like your governor. Lots more of our elected officials need to follow suit. Apologizing for telling the truth does nothing but empower the PC gestapo when what we need to be doing is neutralizing them.

Interestingly Earlichs Vice Governors name is STEELE. Which is what Earlichs has for balls. Gov Earlich takes no prisoners, he doesnt care if he gets reelected because he is a small business owner. Earlich Pest Control is a local Maryland concern.

We picked the right one to dig the demoRoaches out of their corners. His primary opposition ironically is named Mike Bush.

Well, a case could be made for publicly telling the person demanding an apology that you're sorry he's such an idiot.

I wish he was my governor. I'm in NY. Pataki came in as a conservative in the 1994 election. Now, he's like Bloomboob, the mayor of NYC and former rat.

I could read this 20 times and probably still find it amusingly absurd.

Ditto the 'ballistic fingerprinting' scam. One of his campaign platform planks was the idea that if gun control laws aren't doing any good, why have them?

He still has to get past the socialists in Annapolis, but is a definite improvement over Glendenning.

The Left went after Bob Ehrlich cause he's a Republican. But I suspect most Marylanders agree with him on multiculturalism. Political correctness and an apology be damned. I like how the Governor is standing his ground. Today when someone gets "offended," the easy way out is to rush to reassure them you didn't mean to hurt them rather than take a principled stand. I'm surprised Ehrlich didn't cave in when the proponents of an American Tower Of Babbel started turning up the heat.

It was John Wayne in the role of Capt. Nathan Brittles in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon":

"Never apologize Mr. It's a sign of weakness."

I am very glad that Ehrlich is standing his ground. More power to him!!!

The state of MD is filled with liberals dedicated to PC, multiculturalism, and ,oh yes, more taxes on the "rich" to "help" the poor oppressed masses.

It's about time someone stood up to these flakes!
