gas near Raleigh was $1.87/gallon when the barrel was $41, so what will it be now ???
I have to tank up tomorrow and am not looking forward to seeing the bill.
And of course there's no crude oil up in Alaska now is there? Don't want to make a caribou fart or anything.
At what price per barrel does shale oil or synfuel from coal become competitive?
Soon we'll all be driving Chinese go-carts with bodys, from China motors dealerships in Texas....
I'm glad the plan that Prince Bandar & GWB conspired to keep the price of oil low is working.
For perspective, I was in a restaurant the other night and was paying $4 for 12-oz beers. The total bill came to $120. Just today, I went to a clothing store and laid out $200 for trousers, shoes and shirts. Then I went to the supermarket and spent almost another $200 just getting food for the next week.
Again, not that I like paying $2 a gallon for gasoline, but it's hardly going to make much of a dent in my overall budget. It just means that I might be buying less Naxos CDs for a while.
If the higher gas prices spur more drilling in the USA and create incentive for U.S. companies to explore alternative energy sources, then maybe in the long run it isn't such a terrible thing.

I give it a month before the oil market crashes under its own weight, by mid-july we will see hopefully 20 dollar barrels again
It won't matter if the prices rise. The demand for it is inelastic, so there will always be someone there to buy it.
I posted this on another, less active thread:
I have a couple of question for folks on this thread:
* Is there a threshold price for gasoline that makes this the presidential campaign a "one issue" election?
* What is it?
My supposition is that somewhere in the vicinity of 3 bucks a gallon, people will start asking "which candidate will reduce the price of gas?" I expect the answer that the electorate will want to hear is the "quick fix" answer. Therefore I think the issue would favor Kerry.
Just wondering what folks think.......
Gas is still dirt cheap compared to the relative price in 1979 when it was about $2.90 adjusted for inflation. Our vehicles are much more fuel efficient. We are paying about $4 for a gallon of milk. Bread is over $2 a loaf. I can remember when I could buy a beer for 50 cents and gasoline was 17 cents a gallon in 1972. Those days are over. There is probably enough oil, gas and coal right here in the good old U.S. of A to last centuries if we have the economic incentive to get at it. There's no free lunch.
If you remember just about four or five years ago they where talking about an oil glut and the price 14 or 15$ a barrel and gas was around $1 to $1.15 at the pump.
This shortage has been cause by deliberately cutting production in order to raise the price and profits.
We used to have monopoly laws to prevent corporate price-fixing but since the oil companies have gone global and own most of the politicians of political parties they are no longer governed by those laws.
They just get together and decide how much they want for their product since there is no alternate or competition you have what amounts to blackmail.
The oil industry is the reason we passed the antitrust laws in the first place.
I heard some talk show host over the weekend complaining about how Americans want a war on terror as long as they don't have to make any personal sacrifices themselves. If this war makes gas cost $3 a gallon, so be it he said. It is true that we have no honor here anymore, and thank goodness this generation wasn't around during WW2 where they had ration cards!
