Abusive treatment under the supervision of military intelligence officers may have been intentionally used as part of the interrogation of Iraqi captives at the Abu Ghraib prison, according to a previously unpublished photograph of U.S. soldiers and other personnel obtained by NBC News.
The photograph was taken during the interrogation of several Iraqi prisoners who are depicted naked in a heap on the floor, according to a military police officer who faces a court-martial in connection with alleged abuses at the notorious facility on the outskirts of Baghdad.
The officer, Spc. Charles A. Graner Jr., 35, of Greene County, Pa., is leaning against the wall in the photograph, which was provided by his attorney, Guy Womack.

Graner identified four other soldiers in the photograph, labeled Nos. 4, 5, 7 and 8 in the copy provided to NBC News, as military intelligence officers, who he said were in charge of interrogations at the prison. A civilian translator is labeled No. 2, and Graner is No. 1.
Is an "Spc." an "officer"? I thought it was an elisted ranking? Somebody help me out on this. Thanks.
That's what I thought too.
Spc= Specialist, and would be enlisted personnel
It is--Specialst is an E4. Typical press doesn't have a clue about things military and shows their stupidity to the world.
Graner identified four other soldiers in the photograph, labeled Nos. 4, 5, 7 and 8 in the copy provided to NBC News, AS MILITARY INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS, who he said were in charge of interrogations at the prison.
Spc is an abbreviation for Army enlisted, grade 4 (E-4) personnel; they are called Corporals (Cpl) in combat arms units.
This (video/graphic)is what they have been doing to our soldiers. And what they want to do to all of us the first chance they get.
Some day we will look back on what happened in this Iraqi prison and wonder what we were thinking when we allowed people like Teddy Kennedy to compare the American military to these sub-human scum.
Your trying as hard to discredit Bush and the military as the DUrtbags.
This crisis is about a Republican President letting us down, and that's a far more serious matter.
As several people have mentioned Spc is E-4 (Enlisted rank #4). It is typical to get E-4 rank after 3-4 years in service, although you could get it sooner.
E-5 is the first Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) rank, so an SPC is not even a sergeant much less an officer. Most people enlist after high school, but a 35 year old Spc just means he enlisted when he was 30-32.
What's interesting is that PFC England blamed her dilemna on her superiors. PFC is E-3 and it is quite possible that her immediate superior was an E-4. Although the military prefers to have NCOs in charge, there are times when E-4s are in charge of E-3s.
Either the press screwed up and called an SPC an officer, or the person was an officer and the press screwed up by calling him an SPC.
Earth to Neocon: Your Reality-Inversion Field has no effect on me.
David Berg was killed precisely because of these interrogation activities. And how can you possibly imply that his life was saved when in fact he is dead?
You guys are like the incompetent but arrogant doctor who wrote in his surgical report, "The operation was a complete success -- marred only by the patient's death."
And to repeat for the umpteenth millionth time, these prisoners are not terrorists threatening America. They are people defending their homes from an illegal invader.
Meanwhile, as we squander our precious military lives and tens of billions of dollars to hold Baghdad for the American Empire, the terrorists threatening America are in Pakistan, safe and sound and laughing their heads off as the President Who Does Not Read Books bumbles from one crisis of mismanagement to another.
So you know for a fact that there are not any, not even one, POW who is another "Mohammed Atta" in training?
Think again.
Your argument is baseless and is only used as an means to the end for pacifists.
"the terrorists threatening America are in Pakistan, safe and sound"
They are next!
Umm...let's see...
last I heard there was a tyrant named Saddam running a country with a critical location to the Middle East. I think he must have been voted off the Island by you Paleos, right?
The U.S. violated no laws in conquering Iraq...certainly not any applicable U.S. laws.
You aren't trying to cede our sovereignty over to someone else's laws, are you?!
our people doing this were clearly amateurs--the pics demonstrate this. rumsfeld is an amateur--bush should get rid of him or he's inviting kerry into the white house. if you want to win a war, you need to get some professionals in charge.
