My local station is carrying the hearings instead of Rush. Most unusual in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Rumsfeld: First, Senator Kennedy, your statement that other agencies of gov. were concerned about detainees is simply not correct.
Kennedy: This wasn't brought to your attention by the State Dept. So it was brought to you. When did you know it? It's been published that you did know about it.
Rumsfeld: It's not correct to say that nothing was done. It's not accurate. We've had numerous meetings about detainees. ALl in all there are approx. 40,000 detainees who were captured. There are over 30,000 who were already released.
The ICRC came in and said the ywere concerned about the ABu Gareb prison, that's correct. The prison report found a number of those things were already underway in terms of corrections. Additional corrections were made.
The military command took a number of steps.
When were we knowledgeable? Sarg. Garby told his supervisor he had information about abuses on the 14th of Jan. By the next day an investigation had been started and went out and told THE WORLD that investigations had begun into the abuses.

When are any Senators from the right or middle going to get their chance to ask questions?

If he's got a brian, he must understand the difference between himself (an American airman) and sub-human terrorist scum.

I thought the job of our soldiers is to kill terrorists, not to keep them from getting killed in the process of obtaining vital information from them, which will save innocent lives, our innocent lives.
This hearing is just more evidence, that the Democrats are indeed on the side of the terrorists.

This is a remarkable scene. It is analagous to the conflict of the ages: Good verses Evil.
I am praying that the Secretary will be strong, faithful to truth and victorious over the enemy.

"Every time these "scandals" come out - the Memo leak, Clarke/Woodward books, this crap, I keep thinking, this will pass... we'll move on, the voters will forget about this or place it into historical context... I've been saying this for 4,5, maybe 6 months. There's only 6 months left till the election... Can they really run out the clock the next 6 months, bringing up a new scandal, a new book, shrill charges over nothing... Lying about the economy (jobless growth), then when that's no longer an issue, move to the next issue de jour (i.e. Oil prices, WOT)?"There are only two types of campaigns: positive and negative.
To be "positive," you have to have popular new ideas to tout to the public. Consider that President Bush has faith-based-charities, national missile defense, spreading Democracy, tax cuts, pro-life, letting citizens manage portions of their own Social Security retirement fund (i.e. privatizing SS), private scholarships for inner-city minority children, etc.
In contrast, the Democrats have...nothing. They can't run on a "prescription drugs for seniors" platform anymore, and being pro-abortion and against Vietnam are pretty passe.
This leaves them with only one direction: negative.
So they are *depending* upon some bad news, some scandal, some tragedy, etc.
Go over to DemocraticUnderground right now and you'll see them *BEGGING* for bad economic news, deaths of Americans abroad, etc. Time and again you will see the Democrats eagerly grasping at every possible scandal.
NEWSFLASH: that won't win an election (at least not nationally).
Oh, it might be popular in some trendy socialite circles in leftist enclaves and at NYC-style cocktail parties, but it won't "play" in flyover country.
And the lesson from back in 2000 was that Flyover Country was all that GWB needed to become President.
No doubt that lesson burns up the few Lefties intellectually savvy enough to grasp it.

I know McCain is a former POW, and I am sorry for that. That does not give him the right to turn this into a partisan kangaroo court.

What did you know? When did you know it? You were told and nothing was done.
Rummy: Your statements inaccurate. 43,000 captured. 31,000 already released. Big task. Red Cross voiced concern. Corrections started to be made. Taguba's report found a number of corrections already made.
Specialist Darby told superior that he had information about abuses (jan 13 or 14); on Jan 16, allegations announced and said they were being investigated. Public Affairs went out again -- listed types of abuses, even CNN was there. Rummy and Myers were meeting with the president and discussing it.
