Flush from the success of The Passion Of The Christ, Mel Gibson is looking back in time once again to produce an epic about Boudicca, who led Britain against Roman conquerors.
Dubbed Braveheart with a bra, the film will chronicle Boudiccas rise from peasant girl to a military leader who united the Celtic tribes of Britain.
Gibsons production company, Icon, appears keen to cash in on further historical tales, after The Passion netted hundreds of millions of pounds at the box office.
The film will be directed by Gavin OConnor who told the Hollywood trade paper Variety: What drew me is that she was driven by personal revenge.
Her goals were never political and never went beyond avenging her slain husband and child.
She managed to bring together all of these warring tribes to stand against the Roman Empire.
It is a masculine story with a female point of view.
Brian Klugman, who co-wrote the script with Lee Sternthal, said: We spent over a year researching Queen Boudicca, Celtic Britain and the Roman Empire, and another year writing the script.
LOL
I hope so!
Well this will be a twist. The Brits will be the good guys.
"Wasn't Roman civilization good for early Britain as opposed to a bunch of barbaric blue faced berserkers?"
The Celts were surprisingly civilized. They had medicine, arts and law. The Romans were the ultimate pillagers.
"Braheart"?
Ain't got no bra's in them there times.
I never seen it before but would love to see it!
She was a fierce fighter for freedom, against the Roman possession of England. (Or would become England at least.)
Sure, she's "hero" them. - Don't put the liberal "spin" on her reputation against her: They lie for their own propaganda, then believe those lies.
Nice!
Reba would be perfect.
So, it's worth selling" freedom for (some other culture's opinion of) higher civilization?
Or excusing Hillary's presidency with "the stock market is high"?
O.K., O.K. I mistyped. I know the difference between Bretons and Britons. Although Bretons are probably descended, at least in part, from Britons.
This was posted back in April!!!!
How come you picked it up now? Is the flick on the way to being released?
I guess this movie is Mel Gibson's apology to England for The Patriot and Bravehart.
Yeah, I know. But there'e brutal and then there's BRUTAL.
I can take battlefield scenes - that's brutal. But watching somebody get scourged, crucified, hang drawn and quartered - well, that's BRUTAL and when shown in excruciating detail borders on the types of "entertainment" provided in the Colosseum almost 2,000 years ago.
Again, HOW did you pick this out after so many months??
Today's mainstream media has pretty much convinced me that there is no such thing as 100% accurately depicted history, and that everyone twists it to suit their own ends. The press can't even accurately depict events that happened in the last year or two, much less centuries ago.
I don't think Gibson is guilty of anything that every other historian isn't guilty of as well.
I don't find his distortions of history as objectionable as his dwellling on particularly gruesome and brutal aspects of it in lurid detail.
The Passion of the Christ at least had a religious message.
But from what I saw and heard about it - I have too waek a stomach to watch it in its entirety - it was really pretty brutal. Some of his other productions dwell too much on the brutal parts of the periods in volved.
I think it would be nice for movies of a historical nature to place some kind of disclaimer on the screen before the start stating in effect that this was dramatic rendition of past events which do not necessarily reflect actual historical events.
You and I are bright enough to separate the real from the imagined. But the unwashed masses of people, particularly those younger products of our diluted "history" and "social studies" courses are not.
Pretty stupid quiz that gives the answer within the question.
It was indexed to GGG 28NOV05, I wouldnt have commented had I realized that this was actually over a year old.
Go to Amazon.com and look-up the movie "The Three Hundred Spartans". It was just released on DVD last year. Quite good!
If you thought BRAVEHEART was graphic, wait till you see this one. The Romans did not take kindly to dissent.
