The gist of Kerry's argument. "Medals" and "ribbons" are interchangeable, so Kerry wasn't lying when he told the interviewer back in '71 that he had given his "medals" back.
But when Gibson came up with quotes from Kerry in which he had clearly distinguished between medals and ribbons, Kerry just replied with bluster, raised W's National Guard record again, and said that this was all a GOP smear that he wasn't going to let them get away with.

I thought he did himself great damage this morning.
He kept alluding to some conspiracy. He also said several times that President Bush couldn't even prove he completed his National Guard service. Most people watching will remember that the president even provided his dental records, for crying out loud.

Since Kerry's appearance on Good Morning America is the talk of the day, I'm taking the liberty of pinging the Today Show ping list to this thread.

I would like someone to ask him if he thought Pat Tillman died for a just cause. It would be great to watch him melt down into a pool of "nuance" in front of the camera.

Man, Kerry is pitiful. I have been around military folks all my life and he says that medals and ribbons are interchangeable in military references.
~"This is Republican smear and GWBcan't even prove he wen to guard duty and Republicans have no record to run on."~
WOW, he is pitiful.
And he was fighting Charlie when Charlie was trying to softball him.

Kerry can try to spin this any way he wants, but the bottom line is that he has been forced to totally get off message and be on the defensive.
I was at a Republican conference yesterday, and an RNC official said that one of the Bush campaign objectives is "always to be on the offensive, never to be answering questions."
This is a textbook example of a situation a candidate does NOT want to be in. Let's hope it continues to play out for several days, keeping Kerry off message.

ABC/Charlie Gibson interview of Kerry regarding medals controversy:
Kerry giving a rambling non-response. Took ribbons off chest and threw them over the fence. Ribbons and medals, interchangeable.
They threw back DD-214's, dogtags, ribbons [but Kerry didn't throw his medals, only the ribbons, although they are interchangeable and the Republicans and GWB are the ones attacking, yada, yada, yada.]
Its GWB's fault.
Kerry interrupts Charlie Gibson's question. Says medals he threw were from 2 other men.
Gibson collars him on 'no distinction between ribbons and medals'. Says Kerry made the distinction, himself.
Kerry, There were millions watching on TV. It is Karen Hughes's fault. It is GWB's fault. GWB can't prove he showed up at the National Guard. [Kerry keeps trying to shellshuffling by attacking GWB.]
[Gibson is holding Kerry's feet to the fire.]
Kerry is rambling around an answer without giving a definitive answer. "There was a great wrenching about the whole thing." [huh?] They voted to throw. 'I didn't have my medals, so I threw my ribbons.'
[Talk about dipsydoodling. Now he's back attacking GWB.]
[Kerry didn't help himself by that ABC interview.]
Now on to important news---Michael Jackson fired his attorney.....

I find myself wondering: if you're one of Kerry's senior aides, perhaps his communications director, what do you say to Kerry after his GMA appearance?
Do you lie and say: "great job, boss! You really have squelched this scurrilous smear. That should surely put an end to the controversy!"
Or do you dare to tell the truth?: "you came across as a Clinton-like weasel, but without the charm. We better do something else fast or you're toast!"

If the media weren't so much into the ABB (Anybody But Bush), they would really have fun taking Kerry down. He is such rich fodder [snicker, I typed that and then thought a moment about what I typed]. He doesn't need the Conservative attack dogs after him; his own mouth is doing him in. The media could really have fun if they weren't so steeped in their agenda.

If Kerry were at Chappaquiddick instead of Vietnam, he could've save Mary Jo Kopechne.
