Discussion Thread: Kerry's Appearance on GMA Regarding Medals
Good Morning America - ABC News
Posted on 04/26/2004 5:09:02 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest
Let's see if I can kick this off.
During the promo at the beginning of the show, where he was standing by live in West Virginia, and throughout the interview itself, Kerry tried hard to keep this huge "what me worry?" smile plastered on his face. He coupled it with numerous condescending head shakes that seemed to imply "these poor benighted fools who so miserably misunderstand the greatness that is John Kerry."

The best measurement of how former moderates will vote are discussions with young mothers who came over to our side after 9/11.
In spite of all the attacks on GW, they are still on his side.
Many are donating money and getting ready to put up signs. Many have liberal parents, and they are very upset with their Hate America Liberal Parents.
I'm seeing the same disgust with moderates re Kerry that I saw with Gray Davis before we flushed him down the sewer pipe in California this year. Their ages are late 20's to mid to late 50's. They have about as much contempt for al Querry as we have. These are people who didn't vote for GW in the last election, and they have come around to our side. If this is throughout California and continues, al Querry will be in trouble in California.

He says he had 11 medals. If you get a Purple Heart and wounded two more times, you don't get two more medals. You get a star, I think, to go on the medal. So, the PH is one medal. Add a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, a ND medal...I count four.
I don't think you qualify for a Good Conduct medal until you've been in more than four years. If my memory serves me correct.

Vice President Cheney was born January 30, 1941. This means that in 1966 he was 25. By the time the Viet Nam war was in full swing, 1968, he was 28, he was married and a father.
He wasn't draft material, and I find it amazing that they think they can attack on this issue. McAuliffe might have been too young to serve, but Cheney was almost TOO OLD.

The old timer was right on the money re: "Son, (he always called me 'son'), if you marry for money, you will earn every penny."
We have seen it on both sides, usually where the woman marries for money and like with al Querry, where the guy married for money. They traded their lives and souls for the $'s they got via the marriages.

I think you are right, I remember only getting Oak Leaf Clusters for additional awards and I think the GCM is every three years. The NDSMs second award was a star I think, not sure anymore, would have to look at my Class A's hanging in my closet.

and said that this was all a GOP smear that he wasn't going to let them get away with. When did ABC and Charlie Gibbson become part of the VRWC??

For example, Good Conduct, National Defense, etc, are ribbons that do not have a corresponding medal. Beg to differ. I have a both Good Conduct Medal (actually, just barely) and a National Defense Service Medal. (There's another green and white striped medal but I think that was issued by Vietnam rather then the U.S. It's got a map of VN on the front and the words "Chien-Dich", "Boi-Tinh", and "Viet-Nam" on the back. And, no, I have no idea what that means.)
For some reason, I only have those three medals to go with six ribbons. I really ought to look them up to refresh my memory on what the heck they are.

You're right! This needs to get out there to counter the attacks!
I don't think it ever got to the point that married men with children were being drafted. During WWII yes, eventually, I'm pretty sure.
But not during Vietnam. Anyone else remember this?
To: Bob
I was told Viet Nam couldn't afford a medal so they only gave the green ribbon. The U.S. gave a yellow medal with ribbon.

Ref your # 263:
From that Saturday NYT column, we discover Kerrey has his own Harry Thomasson film-meister. "George Butler, a longtime friend of Mr. Kerry who is now working on a feature-length film about him." Revving up the legacy!
I want to know if 60 Minutes will replay this:
"Mr. Kerry's fame was instant. Morley Safer profiled him on "60 Minutes." The publisher of a book about the veterans by Mr. Butler and David Thorne, another friend and veteran, suddenly insisted that Mr. Kerry be listed as an author. Offers came in for his own television program and for a record album."

My brother in law was a married school teacher and he joined the NG to get out of being drafted. The truth is lots of men did this.

I was told Viet Nam couldn't afford a medal so they only gave the green ribbon. The U.S. gave a yellow medal with ribbon. I don't know about that. They were able to afford mine. :=)
The yellow ribbon with two green stripes on the outside, three red ones in the center, and a star is another one that everyone got. I really do need to look these up online. I haven't even thought about them for years (actually decades) until this thread came up.

Your # 165 VERY insightful!
I didn't know the local DC station was an NBC affiliate. Have they always been? (I know local Atlanta stations have switched networks, so it's possible). Maybe they were ABC back then and had to give ABC first dibs on the tape.
But my guess is NBC turned down the tape.
I'm guessing media insiders knew about the tape for awhile. The Saturday NYT column now reads like an innoculation attempt.
I continue to think that if ABC really wanted to roast Kerrey on this, Peter Jennings would have aired it on his night news, before GMA.

Just in time for Athens, the latest Olympic sport: the medal throw! You are sooooo bad. LOL. I think an emergency letter to the IOC to add this as an event in Athens is in order. I'm sure the new guy heading up the IOC will go for it. No skating judging controversy in Athens so they'll need something to spice up things...

Like you, my memory has faded some. My memory is that one was given by the U.S. with a medal and the other was from South Viet Nam and was a ribbon only.
Either way, I'd still like to know what Kerry's "11" medals were for. He even used the term "9" that he says he through over the fence. Was he saying he threw over the PH medal with two oak clusters and calls it "3" medals?
