No-Carb Eating Couple Booted From Buffet for Eating Too Much Beef

Apr 23, 2004

The Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A couple on a low-carb diet were kicked out of a buffet restaurant after the manager said they'd eaten too much roast beef. Sui Amaama, who along with his wife have been on the Atkins Diet for two weeks, was "It's so embarrassing actually," said Isabelle Leota, Amaama's wife. "We went in to have dinner, we were under the impression Chuck-A-Rama was an all-you-can-eat establishment."

Not so, said Jack Johanson, the restaurant chain's district manager.

"We've never claimed to be an all-you-can-eat establishment," said Johanson. "Our understanding is a buffet is just a style of eating."

The general manager who was carving the meat Tuesday became concerned about having enough for other patrons and asked Amaama to stop, Johanson said.

Offended, the couple asked for a refund. The manager refused and called police when they would not leave.

The couple said they have eaten at Chuck-A-Rama's $8.99 buffet at least twice a week, but did not plan to return.

How about the good old fashioned way?

I mean, the Roman way?

1) Stuff yourself.

2) Use the Vomitorium.

3) Repeat 1) and 2) until the place closes!

That's why I never liked "all you can eat formats" despite my hearty appetite. Most regular restaurants give ample portions (some say too much) to allay any possible complaint of skimpy servings. Occasional waste caused by this method of serving is preferable to "all you can eat" gimmicks which prompt people to stuff for reasons already stated. However, any establishment offering "all you can eat" had better have reserves to cover unforeseen contingencies such as the Atkins Diet.

The customer is not always right, but most businesses promote the perception of the opposite being true. To those who "game" the system, companies often tell them to get lost. My college roommate "gamed" Sears out of three sets of workboots over 12 months, because the soles melted in contact with gasoline in the service station where he worked. The store manager told him to get lost eventually, and seek help from a podiatrist, because he probably walks funny.

You're right. The Frying Dutchman was the name of the captain's restaurant and his boat was the Rusty Barnacle.

"Come for all you can eat seafood at the Frying Dutchman!"

"Come see Bottomless Pete! Come for the freak, stay for the food!"

I thought his restaurant was the Frying Dutchman.

You are correct... The Rusty Barnacle is where Marge and the kids go out to eat in the episode Homer's Night Out. Meanwhile, Homer is attending a bachelor party in the back room of the restaurant, and Bart decides to try out his new spy camera...

Congrats to you and the Mrs.

Thanks. The Mrs is overjoyed that she fits nicely into size 8 pants. She was dreading the thought of having to order size 18 last May. She had to special order a size 36 uniform shirt for work. All her co-workers wear 42 or larger.

The article states that they don't bill themselves as an "all you can eat" restaurant. It's buffet style, and doesn't give patrons the right to act like gluttons.
