Barbara (L) and Jenna Bush, the daughters of U.S. President George W Bush, walk together from the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, April 11, 2004 after President Bush (news - web sites) and members of his family visited with soldiers wounded in Iraq (news - web sites). Bush awarded 10 purple hearts to troops recovering in the hospital, after attending an Easter Sunday Church service at a chapel within the army base in central Texas.

"My daughter, who is a junior at Rice, attended church wearing a very pretty pastel shift that was both attractive and demure."

A picture caught of a moment in time with a strong wind blowing and a figure like Jenna Bush's could change the impression of a demure and attractive pastel shift.

I don't know anything about Barbara and Jenna other than what I read, see, and hear from a media that is bent on presenting a certain image of them. I'm betting your daughter wouldn't fare any better if she were President Bush's daughter. I have every confidence that the media guys and gals could have folks questioning her morals, character, fashion sense, etc., in no time flat.

I have not written that anyone has won or lost.

I'm not talking about who won or lost; I'm talking about judging people, as in "casting aspersions," which, at least in MY Bible, is a no-no.

You fit that to a T.

As it so happens, I am a very good-looking guy.
And modest as well!

Truthfulness is a virtue, while false modesty is not.

Like I said, you obviously don't get out much. Those girls were just fine and dressed age appropriate to visit a hospital.

Okay, I'll ask.

What did you get for your birthday?

Oh spare me, you think those soldiers wanted to be focusing on the Lord rather than focusing on the two good looking daughters of the President, both of whom have very good legs by the way. What puritan school did you recently arrive from. Give me a break!

Actually, no, I haven't. And I am most assuredly NOT interested in how you got yours.

Dear Gretchen,

They are 21 years old. I think we should be glad to see that they are 1. at Easter services with their family and not running around on a beach in Florida, 2. Wearing dresses and not jeans, and they have no tattoos or body piercings, and 3. Went to visit wounded GI's.

Standards and tastes change over the years. This is actually quite conservative clothing from what I have seen of my daughter's friends. You should have seen some of the outfits that were worn to my daughter's large, formal, evening church wedding! We had everything from jeans to a strapless dress!

However, I was glad that my daughter had so many friends who wished her well. And I am glad that the Bush daughters are behaving like this. How many times did Chelsea visit wounded or ailing soldiers?

They look just fine to me and I am sure their parents were pleased as can be to have the weekend with them.

Plus Miss Marple, they have great legs, good hair, very little make up and tastefully done, the decency to have on lengthy flowing skirts, little jewelry and aren't cavorting on Majorca or whereever with their lover in a bikini with their stomachs pooching out. The people here are reminding me of islamofascists with their attitudes toward young women. The girls are gorgeous, and perfectly appropriate for a chapel on a military base in texas. It is not the Vatican. And I will bet the soldiers loved them.

I have raised a teenager.

If the parents get it into their children's heads, throughout the years they are growing up, that it is important to dress modestly, they are far less likely to crash the fashion guard rails when they are selecting their own clothing as adults.

Allowing for the occasional fashion faux pas that young people are going to make, I still do not see evidence that mom and dad got that principle into these two.

Out of curiosity, was it the garden-variety- a standard "stock" letter which goes out to all contributers/supporters (which is still nice, especially if it included a pic of he and Laura), or a letter specifically to you?

Dressing modestly is in the eye of the beholder and is not necessarily a virtue in my mind. Modest to you is not the same as modest to me. Would you allow for that? These girls are not immodest in my opinion.

In answer to your post way upthread...

I've gone to Catholic church amost every week of my life, and I've never seen anyone carry in a Bible unless they were going to give a reading as a part of the mass, and wanted to use their own Bible.
The only time I've ever taken a Bible into church was for my daughter's baptism. I had asked the priest if my brother - my daughter's godfather - could do a special reading, and I wanted it to be read from my husband's great-great-grandfather's Bible.

Terayza is practing dem photo-op religion, not Catholicism.

My pastor has spoken from the pulpit repeatedly (always new members coming in who bring the world's standards with them) to ask / encourage / exhort the women to cover themselves up so the men can concentrate on worshiping the Lord.

If I had a pastor who thought that way, I would be looking for a new church. Are you a Muslim? Keeping women covered at all costs seems to be their mindset as well.
