The second Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) was laid down by the New York Ship Building Corp., Camden, N.J., 27 December 1956; and launched 21 May 1960, sponsored by Mrs. Neil H. McElroy; and commissioned 29 April 1961 at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard , Capt. William F. Bringle in command.

The Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) has been on active duty 43 years. Typically a US Navy ship has a active duty life span of 25 or 30 years before being decommissioned. US taxpayers are getting their moneys worth with the Kitty Hawk.

Well, for some reason the Japanese are a little squeamish about American Nukes. The Kittyhawk is on of the last conventionally powered carriers still on active duty. And the shipyard at Yokosuka is superb, she will live on there indefinitely. Jack

They would have to get through an extensive array of radar without being noticed - not very likely. As soon as any aircraft, ship or anything else is picked up, fighter jets will be scrambled in a hurry to challenge the threat.

While America and the President are distracted with these impeachment proceedings (President Clinton impeachment),the Persian Gulf fleet, headed by the U.S. Aircraft Carrier Kitty Hawk, will be attacked by nuclear warhead tipped cruise missile in the Persian Gulf.

It was my understanding that the Kitty Hawk is slated to retire as soon as the GWB comes into service. If the nuke issue is a problem, there is still the JFK.

You know, the most likely form of attack would be an inside job, a muslum sailor placing a small charge in the bomb magazine. If he can detonate one bomb, the resulting explosive chain reaction would gut the ship. A smuggled suitcase nuke would much more likely be headed for the vicinity of the White House than a ship, even a carrier.

Or, they might try another "USS Cole" type attack: wait near a narrow water "choke point" the carrier has to pass through, then come out, (at night?) in a number of small speedboats or (more likely) take over a harbor tug, pack it with explosives, (or gas/germ weapons?) and ram. If you have enough such suicide attackers to keep the escorts busy, it might work. (I admit it is not likely, but you never know).

If the terrs sink a carrier what kind of escalation would you expect from the U.S.? We already have 120,000 troops in Iraq. Another 20,000 in Afghanistan. I would think that escalation would not be possible with the kinder gentler compassionate high moral ground type of combat we are employing.

I would advocate a withdrawal of troops from Iraq and knock off Syria and Iran with Nukes. I would say, we tried it the nice - turn your cheek way, and now it will be the - kill em all let whoeva sort em out. But hey thats just me.

There have been reports that al-Qaeda has 15-20 vessels and intends to become involved in attacks from the sea. I haven't read any reports as to exactly what kinds of vessels they have.

What more can we do on the offensive front?

We are not in an all-out war. How many factories in your town
have stopped making widgets and converted to production of war materials?
Have you been issued your gasoline ration card?
Are there still young men in your town that haven't been activated?
How many times in the last year has the front page of your paper
had the headline "Capitol of rag country (fill in the blank) gone?"
Few of us here at home have been effected directly by this WOT,
as would be the case if it was a real all-out war.

We're not anywhere near "all-out" war footing, as evidenced by the continued existance of several ME nations.

Offensively one SSBN could put a stop to the rag terrorism in 15 minutes. That's all-out war.
We won't do it though, because they're not a nation destroying treat to us.
We also like to think of ourselves as civilized.
