"what in AQ's arsenal could possibly get close enough to an aircraft carrier that could destroy it?"7200 nekkid virgins swimmin' up?
To: AntiGuv
Granted, a carrier could easily shoot one down - obviously. I wonder if they'd do that? Probably.
Considering that
1) A carrier normally does not operate near any commercial air traffic lanes.
2) The Hornets would be on any intruders within 200 NM like stink on you know what.
3) The cruiser/destroyer screen would not let a target within 50 NM of the carrier.
The odds of the CARRIER shooting down a airliner is close to nill.
The airliner would be down well before the carriers last ditch defences would kick in.

Re: you're tagline. Kelly's Heroes is one of the only WWII movies made using factual hardware. That movie rules!
As far as what attacks are possible. If AQ manages to use effective weapons and tactics against a US Carrier, the war will have to be prosecuted entirely differently.

On a highly technical note: it's pretty hard to destroy an aircraft carrier. I seem to recall reading somewhere that a Nimitz-class Carrier only has liferafts for half the crew, since the Navy assumes that anything severe enough to sink one of those bastards will have killed the remainder. This threat makes no sense directed at the Kitty Hawk. I don't see anything they could use against a CVBG at sea. In port, however, could be something else altogether. I remember thinking, at the time of 9-11, that if I'd been directing things I would have sent some planes at Norfolk. After all, believe me, Democrats (and our so-called "allies") would have been much less upset if it had been three thousand sailors killed that day.

If you want a real education on the topic, locate and read the books
Nimitz Class and
Kilo Class, by Patrick Robinson.
They are fictional novels which discuss EXACTLY this scenario...a jihadist attacking a carrier.

Supercavitating weapons can do it too...but I doubt Al Quida has access to anything like that.
It would have to be asymetrical and that almost surely means at dock or in harbor.
But like I said earlier...for them to announce it the day before almost ensures that it is not credible and is more likely a bluff or a diversion to get us looking the wrong way.

Of course, truth be told, there are 99.9% odds that this is simply nonsense. The Northeast Intelligence Service basically translates postings from Arabic-language message boards, giving them far greater credibility than they deserve.
The odds are much higher that this is the work of some teenager in a Damascus Internet Cafe, who is now laughing their head off at the thought of the US Navy having to respond to them.

Well, just for the sake of clarity, I meant the entire carrier group when I said "a carrier could easily shoot one down"..

The USS Kitty Hawk is usually in deep waters near Japan.
Don't really be too sure about that, the Midway, who was also forward deployed out of Yokosuka, spent a LOT of time in the NAS (North Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman.

You must have missed the four Kilo-class Russian diesel subs the Iranians own. Or the TEN the Chinese own, along with many others.
The KILO class is the most modern diesel the Soviet navy ever produced. Anyone with $300 million can have one, fully equipped.

My point is that if such an attack was even semi-successfull we would have to take off the gloves and fight a total war. Draw the lines with other nations and mobilize. To not do so would be folly.

Yeah, I know, but it's prompted healthy speculation. I'm sure it also did at the Pentagon and the White House.

Reading the link, I'm not so sure it was intended to date set for tommorrow, but rather a date of the 17th of the month and that date had been predicted in Jan of an earlier year.
What is interesting is that the same series of predictions indicates California will be the recipient of God's wrath.
This is interesting at least to myself as I've had numerous dreams of similar context, but nothing in regards to an attack on an aircraft carrier. The more recent one on California was a simple message,.."There was a time when it wasn't good to be in Berlin. Now is not the time to be in California."
What is interesting to me is that others are reporting similar dreams regarding a tribulation in California. Mine have included tsunamis, volcanic activity from My. Lassen to the Coachella Valley, meteor showers or volcanic bombs, earthquakes, a no-man's land mapped out from the vicinity of Walla Walla Washington to the Sea of Cortez including the entire state of Arizona and back to Walla Walla, observing multiple mushroom clouds (kiloton sized) and one in the distance (Megaton sized), and an ominous Friday the 16th, the most infamous day of America and something about United Flight 961. These were a few highlights from the dreams I've been having of about a thousand or so dreams since they began in April of 2000, sometimes 3-5 vivid dreams nightly, other times maybe 3 dreams a week. More recent ones have been in Greek and Hebrew,...only problem is that i don't read Greek or Hebrew, so in my spare time I'm trying to pick up the language to understand them a bit more.
I'll place more emphasis on interpretation through Scripture first and I have my hands full with that. In regards to the dream aspect, some of it is spiritual warfare. I just don't know which might be true of false, so I place my faith first through Christ in Scripture.

This Arabic writer is quoting a prophecy by - Stephen L. Bening.
http://www.angelfire.com/fl3/gammadim/trackpersian.html snip
The word of the Lord was entitled "And A Little Child Shall Lead Them". I received absolutely no feedback from this word, except that I think most people who read it thought me to be a madman. To the natural mind, a nuclear attack by an Arab country against the United States appears to be preposterous. Nevertheless, that is what I saw!
To summarize, I said at that time that on the 17th day of some future month, the U.S. Aircraft Carrier Kitty Hawk and supporting vessels would be destroyed by a surprise attack of cruise missiles...
snip
While America and the President are distracted with these impeachment proceedings (President Clinton impeachment),the Persian Gulf fleet, headed by the U.S. Aircraft Carrier Kitty Hawk, will be attacked by nuclear warhead tipped cruise missile in the Persian Gulf. The Lord said that descendants of Ishmael will do this thing. It will occur in near proximity of time to the impeachment proceedings.
These events will trigger great tribulation. America will cease to function as a military power and will be brought down in fulfillment of the prophecies of Obadiah in one day... "
The Clinton impeachment was what? 6 years ago? And the 17th of a month. Tomorrow is the 30th, not the 17th. It's not even the 17th day on the Islamic calendar. Tomorrow is the 8th day of the 2nd month.
To: xrp
A carrier at sea would be very, VERY hard to get an approach on.
If I remember correctly, the captain of the Kitty Hawk was canned recently because a Russian plane successfully buzzed the ship. I assume that they're a little more prepared now, but that incident was very troubling when it happened.
