Move over greasy cheeseburgers and fries. Researchers now say the widespread use of the liquid corn sweetener, fructose, in soft drinks, baked goods and juice drinks might be a big factor in the swift rise in obesity in the United States.

"Suggesting that people are somehow fatter today because soft drinks and food and dairy products are sweetened with HFCS, instead of sucrose, or table sugar, is totally ridiculous. People are heavier today because they are taking in too many calories and not getting enough exercise," said Richard Adamson,

Is common sense still legal??

"We can't show causally a direct linkage" between increased HFCS consumption and obesity, "but there's a lot of evidence to suggest it," Mr. Popkin said.

My version:

"We can't show causally a direct linkage" being a liberal and absolute idiocy, "but there's a lot of evidence to suggest it," kayak said.

Sometimes what seems obvious does not always turn out to be true.

What if it turned out that cane sugar made on feel satisfied sooner that fructose? That could make a big difference in eating habits. I cannot be sure of a scinetifoc basis for it, but I think that cane sugar cokes in Hong Kong were much more satisfying that corn syrup (fructose) cokes were here in the US (when I was still drinking them). I did not feel the need to drink so much of that kind of coke.

What if it turned out that there really is a difference between cane and corn sugar? Don't let your common sense stop a pursuit of the truth.

Some things that seem counter-intuitive to some people actually turn out to be true.

All calories are not created equal. I have heard this theory before in relation to milkshakes. There might be something to it.

Maybe HFCS doesn't flip the "off switch" the way cane sugar does.

They feed beef corn to, uh, beef them up.

I'd not write this theory off too quickly.

People who are allergic to corn need to avoid corn syrup. I discovered hidden corn in the form of corn flour, corn starch & corn syrup was the cause of my almost constant headache. What a relief to not have that nagging pain. Corn is in almost everything now, so I read labels constantly.

Here we go again.

Actually, I gotta agree with them here. HFCS is a refined sugar, and IMO refined carbs are the leading cause of obesity in this country. Plus, the stuff is just plain nasty, and is used primarily because of the tariffs on cane sugar to protect Floriduh sugar growers.

re: All calories are not created equal.)))

It is exceedingly difficult to get over the dogma.."a calorie is a calorie is a calorie." All calories may still be calories, but the body just does not treat every calorie the same. People can accept that engines treat different kinds of fuel differently, but they can't give up the idea that the body might process a calorie of sugar differently from a calorie of fat.

I increased my intake of calories, and lost weight. I was surprised, too. It was the kind of calories I ate.

I have heard about Passover coke, too, but I did not know how we would know which coke is this coke. Does the package say so?
