I would like to see a confirmation of weather this was fireworks or an assasination attempt. Because fireworks are set off everywhere during holidays and events by Chinese people. But I'm a little suspicous at the timing of this, leaning towards assasination attempt for now...

Taiwan is a heavily fortified island, even if the PRC could get enough troops across the strait (which they can't), they couldn't maintain supply lines to supply them. The trick is to fly dozens of aircraft in quickly. Many will be shot down and once landed casualties among the troops would be high, but since when have the Chicoms cared about that?

Stomach wounds are not good, just ask Lee Harvey. If the lower intestine is perforated infection is a serious problem. Severe bleeding can also be a problem. Sounds like the President received nearly immediate medical care, which is a great plus in his favor.

How do the Rats play this on wonder?Increasingly, they take almost all sides of almost all issues and then selectively quote something one of them said depending on the situation so as to get the maximum political benefit.

Taiwanese president reportedly shot to death while campaigning
Thursday, March 18, 2004
(03-18) 22:49 PST TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) --
Taiwanese leader Chen Shui-bian was shot in the stomach Friday while campaigning on the last day of the presidential election, a lawmaker traveling with the president said.
Lawmaker Wang Hsing-nan, a member of Chen's Democratic Progressive Party, said he saw Chen being treated in the emergency room in the southern city of Tainan.
"The president suffered a deep wound about three centimeters (1.2 inches) deep in the stomach," Wang told TVBS cable news.
Wang said he was traveling in a car behind Chen's motorcade as it drove through the streets campaigning in Tainan.
"I was traveling in the vehicle behind the president when I suddenly saw his car accelerating," Wang said.
The Presidential Office said that it did not have enough information to discuss the incident.
TVBS cable news showed the convertible the president was riding in parked outside a Tainan hospital.

President Shui-bian It's actually President Chen. The Chinese, the Koreans, etc. put the family name first and the personal name second. Thus Mao Tse-Dung was Chairman Mao, the basketball player Yao Ming is Mr. Yao, etc.
Some Asians, when they come to America, reverse the order (and sometimes also Americanize the name): Pak Chan-Ho of Korea becomes, in America, the baseball player Chan Ho Park, e.g.

Thanks for the comment. I'll bet some security agencies are brushing up on their techniques.

Dozens of aircraft are going to carry enough troops to seize the fortified island of Taiwan from determined defenders before they run out of supply? Don't think so.
