[history]
Remember these Asian fish species: silver carp and bighead carp.
You will likely hear their names many times as Kentucky and neighboring states try to prevent the two invasive species from destroying sport and commercial fisheries, and endangering recreational boaters and water skiers.

The silver carp, which can weigh 60 pounds, can leap high into the air and strike boaters. Its relative the bighead carp is even larger.

"THE ASIAN CARP, which feed primarily on plankton, were brought to this country in 1972 by a fish farmer in Arkansas to help deplete an overgrowth of aquatic plant life." They just want to eat the low scum American fish won't eat...

These fish have started showing up in lake Ponchatrain, I once saw about 100 of these things charge towards the levee...the roar of them crashing into the water was loud as hell

Ouch! Speaking of which . . . Does anybody know if anyone has ever been skewered by one of these guys while simply cruising along minding his own business?

I was fishing in Texas for striper a few years ago when I noticed Sand bass hitting my lures.
The lures for the stripers were to large for the sandies, so I set up an ultralight with a smaller lure and was happily reeling in both fish.
Suddenly my ultralight doubles over and I think wow! I have a striper on this thing!!
I played him for an hour so as not to break the 4 lb line.
It was a 35 lb carp!!

You know what they say:
"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he'll stay out drunk on the boat all day."

"They react to a boat and just go wild," said Benjy Kinman, the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife director of fisheries. "If somebody bangs something or stomps on the floor of an aluminum boat if they're up in a little creek mouth or something they'll all jump out of the water like popcorn." Well, that's when you pull out your 12 gauge and wing a few.

Let me state up front (for the record), exotic species suck and are usually a detriment when introducted into a non-native habitat.
However, while I've yet to hear of an account of silver carp activity in my home port, the thought of hooking into a fish with the size and fighting charatceristics described does present a certain appeal.

Hahahaha....great minds think alike. That's just what I was thinking; or, if you're really in it for the sport, go bow fishing for them, but wait'll they're fully airborne before you let fly.......
