A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Today is "National Anthem Day"

The Star-Spangled Banner

***********************

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight'
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen, thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream;
'Tis the star-spangled banner: oh, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand,
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that has made and preserved us as a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust";
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. —Romans 12:20

Do a deed of simple kindness,
Though its end you may not see;
It may reach, like widening ripples,
Down a long eternity

One act of kindness may teach more about the love of God than many sermons.

Unexpected Kindness

Read: 1 Samuel 26:1-26

If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. —Romans 12:20

Bible In One Year: Numbers 28-30; Mark 8:22-38

A missionary was teaching a class of young girls about kindness. She told them about Jesus, who said that a person who gives a cup of water in His name "will by no means lose his reward" (Mark 9:41).

The next day the missionary watched as a group of weary men walked into the village square, removed their heavy backpacks, and sat down to rest. A few minutes later, several little girls shyly approached the surprised men and gave them all a drink. Then they ran to the missionary. "Teacher!" they shouted. "We gave those men a drink in Jesus' name."

Although Mark 9:41 applies primarily to showing kindness to believers in Christ, we know that we are to "do good to all" (Galatians 6:10) and even give our enemy a drink (Romans 12:20).

In today's Bible reading, David had the chance for revenge against King Saul (1 Samuel 26:9). But because David revered God, he showed kindness to the king.

Showing unexpected kindness to strangers or enemies will not always change their hearts. But sooner or later someone will wonder why we were kind, and we will have an opportunity to tell about our Lord, who was kind even to His enemies (Romans 5:10). —Herb Vander Lugt

Do a deed of simple kindness,
Though its end you may not see;
It may reach, like widening ripples,
Down a long eternity. —Norris

One act of kindness may teach more about the love of God than many sermons.

I'm all in favor of this being "Random Acts of Kindness" day, as well.

Thank you for that reminder ((((((Rus))))))))

In reading again the last verse of The National Anthem:

Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand,
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that has made and preserved us as a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust";
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

One is struck by how appropriate that remains for our nation!
We must always act not out of aggression, but for the rightness of a cause, as befits a nation founded under God Almighty.

"Millions of Americans seek guidance every day in prayer
to the Almighty God. I am one of them. It is humbling
to know people I will never meet are praying for me."

-- President George W. Bush

May Americans, as both leaders and citizens, ever remember that without seeking Him in all we do, we will ultimately fail.

While I have tried to be thoughtful, it is easy to be that when you have earned retirement and have time to be.
Always sensitive to persons with walking difficulties or in wheelchair carts in grocery stores, I give a smile and offer to reach things on high shelves for them. Even if they are proud and decline any assistance, at least they have had a pleasant human exchange in their day. Sometimes there is an object they really do desire, out of their reach.

I also single out young mothers and fathers, admiring their little ones; especially well-behaved children; and give them something positive in their harried days.

In checkout lines, I'm aware of persons, male or female, with just a few items and in a hurry - letting them go ahead, even if mine are few. I recall all those working days when I was tired or in a hurry to get on to the next stop or head for home.

Just yesterday in Wal-Mart in Aiken, with five items, I let a 50-ish probably working woman go ahead, and then a teenage girl with one item.
As the latter left, the first woman putting her change in her purse paused and observed, "I see you let someone else ahead," and smiled.

The choices are ours - stand our ground with a stone face that declares "It's My Turn" - or spread those no cost moments of ease for others....

Your right.

I am constantly willing and offering to help others.
I am sick of the me,me,me,me world we live in.
Could you imagine this world if we all lived like Jesus told us to....

What a wonderful world it would be..

You are so correct ((((LadyX)))))

Try making the God-less dims see that, though. It's like banging your head against the wall. They want to remove God from our schools, our pledge and our money. It's so darned frustrating.

Thanks for the calendar (((((((Freezie))))))

Actually, I used a toned-down red hue and that's the way it looks on my monitor at home as well as here at work on a new Dell. Anyone else see "bright" red?

Did you click on the flag? That's actually a pretty good midi version of our National Anthem.

I love our national anthem. The last 2 lines of the 1st stanza always give me the chills, as that long-dead soldier asks us from the grave if we are still free. Thanks for a beautiful thread.
